We have number portability in 2007, I wonder if we wait off till long enough, we can port 025 numbers off!

Hmm.... I LOVE 6 digits. I have a gem or two on 025 still

I think part of this was discussed before... While you have the "gems", they are not actually yours: they belong to the operator who let you use them on a service provider contract. Like those stars in the Academy Award (Oscars) night: they use the rings, bracelets, pendants and so on but have to return then to Tiffany's after the show (unless you are Elizabeth Taylor and then you have your own diamond collection).

But the idea is interesting... Keep using the same prefix, just on the new network. Not bad at all.

As the 025 network is closing in 2007 the 025 prefix was excluded from the Number portability agreement which commences about the same time as the network closure.
Prefixes are ultimately not the property of the carrier and are managed by the Number Admisistration Deed (NAD). Prefixes are simply assigned to a Carrier and if it ceases to use the prefix than the assignment eventually expires.

So make the most of your 025 numbers between now and April 07.

When number portability comes out.. Who will "own" the numbers then? Iv'e heard of in Australia, paying money for GOLD numbers. mine is like 0400 000 087 or something amazing.

Wonder if it'll be like domain names, Pay a fee and the numbers yours?

Most countries are like that, all about the bottom dollar.

I have 3 rather incredible mobile numbers on 027 which i'm never parting from.

My two old 025's are really nothing special, 025 516 516 and 025 6425 642 (looks like +6425 6425 642 from overseas) but i've had them for yonks and would love to keep them as a memoir.

Ownership of any number is a very "grey" area.
Under Portability the user of a number in some ways has ultimate ownership of that number in that they can select which carrier provides their service. However a user is still bound by their contract with the carrier regarding the provision of service and so in theory they have their service terminated for specific reasons - although you could just port back to another carrier.

When a customer disconnects their number it reverts back to the carrier to which the prefix is assigned so ownership is only for as long as the number is in use.

There is nothing to prevent trading in numbers as you simply reassign the account to the purchaser, as long as they meet the contactual requirements of the carrier. You can easily do this today with Prepaid - it just takes someone willing to pay for the number you have.

In my experience the downside of have a 'great number" is the amount of text spam you receive day and night....aaaaaaaaahhhh

I have a "great" number for my Vodafone CSD data number and typically get at least 1 data call per day from people who obviously dial the wrong number!

CSD! ha ha ha.. scary!

My Telecom sequential gets so many SMS messages I have to to turn it off, when it was on 025 it was pocketcall nightmare as you didn't need the prefix from 025.

My old voda data type numbers are something majorly easy, benefits of being an early bellsouth customer. The actual "voice" number is nothing special.

Datafax, data and there's done other, and I have Mobiledata overlay with free Faxmail thanks to the wonderful deal they were doing at the time!

I used to have 021-Teleco,, that was good for a laugh! specially as I worked there at the time (Big T)
