johnr: Yes i would say the handsets are trying to log onto the 2G or 3G network and we will reject them

Therefore not actually effecting your network until such a time as they start active connections once registered.

so if someone dials 112 or 000 etc during an outage like this on telecom phones, will it go thru the network it can connect to like vodafone ?

I was thinking the same....  if the two companies do not have such an agreement, it's about time they woke up to themselves and remembered their business should be based on customer service.  

I do realise there are some issues relating to compatibility and any such service might be limited but surely some service is better than nothing !


If I were Vodafone/2degrees I'd get some advertising out the door very quickly through Radio and TV througout the south Island offering a special deal for XT customers who used to be Vodafone/2degree customers in the past. And then another general deal for XT users switching over.

Perhaps they could also create some coverage graphs showing how they have coverage in the South Island :D

The problem is a XT handset will not give you nationwide 3G coverage on VF. If data is important to you changing networks means changing handsets, that's not without significant cost.

2G voice and TXT is all 90% if those clients would need, its the simple communication that is key so GSM would be fine with 2100mhz in the cities

it is only a temporary solution and many of them already want to go to 2degrees with commercial 3g network

I would think very long and hard about doing such an offer.  Vodafone have been very quiet during this whole outage, and they are best to.  Parading that your network is still up, and it is superior because customers can still use it, is just asking for a monumental crash - such is the nature of the beast.

Did anyone else think that what Paul Reynolds did on Radio NZ Morning Report (audio) where he minimised the outage by saying only 3% of their network was affected was pretty rude. I'm sure the ten thousand customers are much happier now knowing that they are only 3% and not really that important. I have to say to Paul Brislen's credit I have never heard him using this particularly objectionable form of spin.

I agree it was at very least a rather poor choice of words given the circumstances.

One thing I am curious about, is that if 3% = 10,000 customers,  that means XT has (had ??) approx 330,000 customers,  given that Telecom & Vodafone are the two biggest players,  I would have expected Telecom to have more customers...

I am starting to think that 97% must be Telecom's magic no. 97% Coverage in NZ and now XT is working for 97% of customers. Is this a percentage they just use for spin or are both percentages connected in some way because coverage can be particularly patchy in the South as it is.

Paul Reynolds should change speech writers as his speech did little to repair the damage that has been done to the Telecom brand. Perhaps the situations vacant pages will be full of PR vacancies on Monday.
