BigPipeNZ: virtually nobody uses the QoS functions on their router because it's such a massive PITA

Indeed. I set mine up several years ago and didn't make any progress until I turned the layer 7 module on. That worked fine for about 6 months until most of the streaming sites we used switched to HTTPS....

So here's a real world test for anybody interested:

5Mbps ADSL line

Step 1  Run Team fortress 2.  Ping to server stable around 40ms

Step 2  Start up some torrents (Ubuntu if you're interested).

Result   Ping rockets up to 500ms+ as torrents ramp up and take all the bandwidth. (Unplayable. Get killed.)

step 3   Enable Gaming mode.

Result   Ping drops back to ~40ms within a few seconds.  (still get killed)

2 main conclusions from this:

1) Bigpipe gaming mode is awesome.

2) I absolutely suck at TF2

Would like to see some other real world tests if any of you lot got the app yet.

cheers

hio77:

Nice to see, QOS on the ISP side. hard to explain to many people why it is that QOS on the downstream is ineffective as your only means is to delay or drop packets to shape.

Ild love to know what queuing method exactly is in use, and more so if Codel is used to go with it. That technical detail isnt on the page at all as far as i can see.

I'm not going to go into too much technical detail for two reasons

1) There is an element of commercial sensitivity to it. Don't want our competitors figuring too much stuff out :)

2) I don't understand it at that level of detail anyway  cool

Fair enough Appreciate the upfront response!

its certainly on the technical far side of things, you should know im all about that nitty gritty detail there by now!

Reason i ask is when it comes to bufferbloat.

maybe ill have to give it a bit of a bash at some point innocent

Maybe if someone had approved my Play account (or whatever they need to do for the app to appear.) wink

What is the default mode? Is that Off / No QOS. On fibre I don't care, but good to have it there.

I can see our household using the streaming setting.  So does VoIP end up fighting over the remaining 10% of the pipe? Would be nice if that always had a small reservation.

I'll beta test a Windows 10 Mobile app if you are planning one at some point. :)

How do you actually get the app? Does or need to be manually approved after replying to the email?

I have the App installed (have to use TestFlight or something). Nice looking App. Cool that it knew my usage pattern already. I will have a fiddle with settings and see if it can make a difference (on 100/20, so not much chance I can saturate my downstream normally anyway).

I will test activating the streaming profile, and see how it affects a large web download.

Have you found that once you activate a profile, when you change to another tab such as Notifications or Help, and then go back to Network the profile is no longer activated?
