Xtra seems to be working okay now, my connection died the same way as discussed above
I managed to get to their overseas based helpdesk around 11.30pm who advised of a nationwide outage with no ETA of resolution
I can't load telecom's service status message at present to get an idea of what broke

Internet seems to be back up and running. Had no idea what was going on as couldn't get through to helpdesk (although once I got through to the network status message that siad there were no known issues??)  before I gave up and went to be at 2AM.
Telecom website is still down this morning though .

As of 8:38 this morning the telecom.co.nz site is displaying the message below .  I think "upgrading" means "fixing".  Why would an upgrade of their main site take place starting at 8am?  The XTRA service status, broadband usage meter etc are all hosted at telecom.co.nz so you cant get to those either.  I am surprised there is nothing in the news if the service was out nationwide for several hours last night.
"Unfortunately the www.telecom.co.nz website is unavailable right now as we are upgrading our system between the hours of 08:00 and 14:00pm 29 November."

That's coz the useless media in this country relies on "hand outs" for their stories and Telecom sure as hell ain't going to admit that they had a "cock-up" last night :( :(

'Upgrading' , should be more like trying to 'getting the bastard working again by rebuilding the entire hosting platform due to catastrophic systems failure and data loss'.

I'm so going to laugh if they put up a really really old version of the website and say the upgrade is complete.

Suckage. I was busy working from home (sad eh - missus and kid are away, I should be partying up hard, and there i was eating bad pizza, half-watching Will Smith in Hancock, and remoteing in to work doing catch-up stuff).

Couldn't even use the WAP browser on my 1X phone!!
