Yep, their website and their broadband service totally died. Firstly it was telecom's DNS that died, I was only able to view sites I was on before DNS died. We reset the modem and all service cutoff and it refused to reconnect.

The Nameserver IP's for telecom.co.nz don't ping either.

yeah I can't get to any telecom owned site, must be a big problem, I can get dns to IP info but just no replied pings to anything

DSL is down here. Refuses to authenticate.

Tried calling 0800 GET XTRA - There is nothing on their network status and choosing to speak to someone ends up in a strange sounding 'busy' tone.

Tried calling 123 - Most of the time I get the "This is a recorded announcement, your call cannot be connected because of overloading", the rest of the time I get either a Disconnected or Busy tone.

No access to Telecom websites either.

traceroute and ping are bad indicators for places like xtra as they often block it off entirely,

But their DNS service fell over shortly after 9 and I subsequently saw a few xtra DSL users fall off IRC which leads me to believe its definately not DNS alone.

By all accounts a catestrophic failure. Good timing too, being a Friday evening and all that...

No signature to see here, move along...

Yeah. If you reboot your router then your connection totally dies. I'm pretty sure tracing to alien.xtra.co.nz before worked so it looks like a problem with the NOC

How geek is this. No DNS but I can still remote desktop into work via the xtra broadband from home to work then surf via the terminal server on the Wireless link.

yup thought it was router so i reset it and lost connection completely

someone on the trademe board said they got their working with this

"just changed from Xtra to OpenDNS for DNS has fixed it. 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 is what you want"

but im not sure where to change this.... may help you guys?

OK, well if you've lost connection, you can't get it back. If you haven't do the following:

Browser > 10.1.1.1 > user: admin, pass: admin > advanced user mode > DNS

That's just from memory, on a D-Link ADSL modem. Try that and it should work :)

yup friend of mine rang me to see if it was our exchange or just xtra/telecom well i use opendns as my dns server and this is what it had to say

Nameserver trace for www.telecom.co.nz:
Looking for who is responsible for root zone and followed l.root-servers.net.
Looking for who is responsible for nz and followed ns5.dns.net.nz.
Looking for who is responsible for telecom.co.nz and followed ish4.telecom.co.nz.

Nameservers for www.telecom.co.nz:
ish5.telecom.co.nz returned (SERVFAIL)
ish4.telecom.co.nz returned (SERVFAIL)

so it looks to be nz wide then i guess

Agreed. A Paul Brislen (he's the Vodafone media rep) equivalent for Telecom would be very handy to keep us up to date with what's going on. Why does Telecom/Xtra not participate here? Very poor on their part (this being the largest tech site in NZ).

Same symptoms here.
First no DNS, then (stupidly perhaps) restarted my router to make sure it wasn't an issue my end ... then no PPP.
Surfing off my T3G card at the moment, with someone else's DNS...

So what's up and what's not?

No picture messaging, mobile data, mobile voice, ADSL DNS if still connected or authentication if disconnected since the issue occured?

Still working is SMS and ADSL if you haven't disconnected and don't use Xtra DNS?
