So Telecom's WCDMA network is anything but. 2100MHz WCDMA in the big cities and only 850 GSM/EDGE in the remainder of the country. Very interesting indeed. Even with this announcement Vodafone will be leapfrogging Telecom with their 900MHz WCDMA rollout.

Very disappointing indeed. I would have expected Telecom to follow Telstra and deploy 850 WCDMA nationwide. This isn't innovation, it's a network grasping at straws to maintain competiveness.

um i thought that as well when i read it, but they have not actually said its GSM/EDGE on 850 mhz in the rural areas, just a blend. Who knows what they are going to do.

To early to say but i would imagine they may do both?? seems cheap for $300 million?

What is Mark Ratcliffe smoking?

The new mobile network would be based on WCDMA HSPA technology, "a real leapfrog in capability beyond current mobile broadband offerings", Mr Ratcliffe said.

Only a small percentage of the network will be WCDMA HSPA, the rest will be ancient GSM core network. That's the same technology Telecom slammed for being outdated when they launched CDMA.. Strage isn't it.

Coverage will be provided utilising a blend of WCDMA/HSPA at 2100 MHz and GSM/EDGE at 850 MHz technologies.

In particular, 850 MHz spectrum will be utilised to ensure strong rural coverage is achieved, with 2100 MHz employed largely in cities and large metropolitan areas."

Coverage and spectrum use
Coverage will be provided utilising a blend of WCDMA/HSPA at 2100 MHz and GSM/EDGE at 850 MHz technologies.

In particular, 850 MHz spectrum will be utilised to ensure strong rural coverage is achieved, with 2100 MHz employed largely in cities and large metropolitan areas.

They do this on telstras Next G also, 2100 in cities and 850mhz elsewhere. I guess if its done right it wont be a problem

I'm in the press conference call right now and Simon Moutter (COO Business Market) has just confirmed support for at least five years.

The Next G network is totally different from Telsta's 2100MHz network. 850 is 100% Telstra, their 2100MHz is a 50/50 partnersip with 3. For all intent purposes they are completely different networks.

The five years I'm getting is from the press release:

"Telecom is committed to its CDMA network to the extent the company will guarantee customers their current mobile phones will continue to be supported by Telecom's network for at least the next five years."

Question is, does this apply to their EV-DO data network, too?

Hmm, 2100Mhz in the cities, 850 GSM/EDGE elsewhere, 1X and EVDO already extensively deployed. Wonder what the worldmode roadmap looks like? EVDO that juha describes as "nothing much wrong" widely deployed nationally for NZ mobile data, global voice and data roaming and handset issues sorted.

Interesting times coming.
