Weird. I just clicked on the sign up page and it said this

$109 instead of $119

It didnt ask me if i had a ultra mobile plan or anything

Decided to give this a go, (theoretically) more data for the same price is something you just cant argue with. I don't expect to see any effects of traffic shaping, my connection is terrible as it is. If I don't like it, I'll just change back.

That would fall under real time traffic. I can't see them having a third crack at this without having done a LOT of testing first, they'll have plenty of staff etc trailing the service at the moment I'd hope.

Why do they fail with unlimited plan few years ago?

Why Orcon or Slingshot didn't have the same issue?

Regarding the 2nd point, probably the number of customers that Telecom has over the other two companies put it into a different scale.

I thought they pulled it cos a small number of users were using a very high amount of bandwidth (terabytes) and continually trying to circumvent shaping rules.

Because the last time Telecom offered an unlimited plan the commerce commission were setting UBA prices on Retail-minus basis, and the data cap/usage was an element in the formula they used...

High data usage on an unlimited plan = lower UBA (well UBS) cost back then = lost revenue for Telecom wholesale (which was still part of the same company).

freitasm: Hmmm. If you have 500GB plan you might as well go unlimited, surely?

Telecom have a poor history with their shaping approach/hardware (lest we forget Big Time and Go Large) so I'll be taking a wait and see approach.

500GB with no obvious/detectable traffic management in peak time > unlimited with noticeable traffic management for my purposes.

Time to check the major network hardware vendor's site to see if there are any new press releases/case studies mentioning Telecom NZ.

They were using Bluecoat Cacheflow in 2011...
