Dochart: Do these routers support full cone nat like the previous Huawei HG659b did?

are you looking for loopback/pinhole nat?

I think that’s what I mean. There was a feature on the old HG659b where you could change the NAT to Full Cone Nat. I was wondering if there was an option like that on the new Spark Smart Router.

Thanks hio77. I've ordered a Smart Mesh unit. I'll test and if it works well I'll probably sell my AC Lite.

Any advantage to keeping it connected by ethernet (ie, access point mode)?

As above, if you can i'd highly recommend ethernet backhaul.

Thanks again. I'll look at where I can feasibly run ethernet and have a power socket nearby. The beauty of the Unifi is it's mounted to the ceiling and running on PoE. One spot I thought could work is against an outside wall. I'm guessing that would effectively halve its range as the signal would radiate in a circle from the mesh unit giving half the signal to the neighbour's yard. Or is it somewhat directional? Again - sorry if this has been asked already. It's a big thread.

Ok so im having issues with the spark modem so a couple of questions in the DHCP area

1. Does DHCP address Reservation work? Currently i can randomly create an address reservation, 50% of the time it doesnt work, eg it doesnt even create the entry, the other times it seems to work, however i the hostname is not propagated around the device, so even though i have a properly named address reservation the rest of the pages report the devices as Unknown.

2. Does DHCP removal work, ive yet to be able to remove a DHCP reservation i created, now matter if i delete, or disable then delete it just doesnt work.

3. Is DHCP reservation intended to be more then 10 device?

This week i have had the device reboot 3 times, have had devices connect to the device, not obtain an IP address address and therefore not have any network access but was showing it as connected, had to reboot the router to allow the device to connect as per normal.

Just wondering if these kinks are going to be worked on

1. Yes. I'm yet to see it not work. Is the mac address correct?

2.works fine for me.

3. There is a ui limit currently yes.

The dhcp issues are being looked at I've currently got logging turned up to max on a test device here. Once I've replicated again with the extra logs (normally takes 3-4 days) I'll be again sharing these with the vendor.

We are working quite closely on trying to get these fixed.

There is a know DHCP issue with this modem which is impacting on some of us.
They are replicating and hopefully working on a solution. Read the thread and you’ll pick it up as wifi disconnect / DHCP lease renewal problem.

Is this an issue with Lease times? and not being able to reserve an address that is currently used, but shouldn't be on a reboot? UPDATE : have cycled the router 3 times, use a different PC and have now been able to remove. the two devices.

Based on both these answers i do wonder if your facing a browser related issue?

for a device that you are just allocating a static ip from the existing allocated ip, you should use the connected devices list rather than manually entering the mac address again.

I do apologize if i sound a little developerish; My actual day to day role is both software testing and Software Delivery management.

Yes, it can support more, where that sits in the pipeline at this stage i can't confirm though - so far you may be the first person highlighting to raise a real usecase that's not also using it as a workaround for the above mentioned DHCP issues. (Although Changing IP can also be heavily mitigated by changing the lease time so that you have more time to have a machine offline without it's existing lease being reused.)

The current webui may not be what ends up being on the device long term. Will have to see what the team that looks after the modem lifecycle do there :)

Well, the new modem arrived. First thing I noticed was how good the wireless range is. Also, it’s faster! Wired and wireless my VDSL speeds are 65Mbps down and 20Mbps up (around 5Mbps faster than what I was getting on my hg659). so yeah, happy camper. Smart mesh is on its way so I may retire my AC Lite.

Funny think - I am thinking the same. I have 2 Unifi AP's (one an old 2.4Ghz only model) and to upgrade them is going to cost at least $400 for two new AP's (depending on the model I go with - if I wanted comparable speeds to the Smart Modem, that's about $400 EACH). I already have two Smart Modems, one running as an AP, and it works great. And for $159 I can get a mesh unit to get a true mesh network.

Someone will correct me, but Unifi gear is NOT a mesh solution - it's just multiple AP's and up to clients to switch between them (much like running two Smart Modems???) - where as the Spark Mesh units create a true mesh network, so clients see one big single WiFi network.

I don't see any real reason to upgrade to new Unifi gear when the Smart Modem + Mesh is so cheap. True, I don't get the management side of Unifi, but I don't have any switches etc. so I am not missing out on anything.

You can enter the Mesh's web config by typing its IP address in a web browser. There's an option in there to dim or disable the front LED. However, it's broken and trying to set it brings up an error message. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future firmware update.

Weird: I cannot find this anywhere in the config. has it been removed on the v6.00.15 build05 firmware, or am I blind??

That's the router you are looking at. The Mesh unit has its own IP address. My mesh unit is running firmware: 1.00.04.

As an aside, not being able to change the admin password of "admin" on the Mesh unit is a bit of a concern.
