i think it depends on if the tower density is the same, if it is then yes you would is my guess

I would have thought that by using LTE at 700 they could get the same coverage as 3G 850.
LTE 700 Coverage would not be stronger than 3G at 850 as this would result in data but no voice services.

Well, Im sure we'll move to Voice Over LTE in the next few years which will solve that problem

Hopefully but Telecom still don't even have HD voice on their mobile network so it may take awhile...

If they have any sense they will bypass HD voice and go directly to VoLTE.

VoLTE is dead before it's even been born. It has no future.

So the new iPhone is pipped to have VoLTE embedded, think this might make a big difference in uptake here too?

To be honest, there is only one phone that I'm aware of which has 700mhz apt support so until there is an iPhone and Galaxy out there I don't think there is much urgency to get it rolled out quickly other than to say, "we did it first" or "we're doing it faster".

The Galaxy S5 supports the 700Mhz band - not the initial stock of handsets sold in NZ, but newer models do (G900I)

Ah, ok, I was going by the Vodafone press release: https://www.vodafone.co.nz/press-release/vodafone-first-to-begin-4g-rollout-with-700mhz/

Oh well, hopefully the iPhone 6 will bring APT 700Mhz support along with a bigger screen - rumour has it that there is an announcement on 9 September but I'd say it won't be in NZ until something like the end of September/middle of October at the earliest.

There will be will a few more devices by end of year and we should see this steadily increase next year. Network deployment takes time, so yes there is a "rush" to get this work done.

Just FWIW (and I do realise this is a Telecom thread) the world on the street is that Vodafone are pretty rapidly flicking the switch on their 700 sites and will have a few hundred live by the end of the year.

I still don't think most NZers really grasp how awesome our mobile networks our, and how vastly superior our offerings are to many other countries. At the conference I was at in Vegas a couple of weeks ago I bragged about getting over 130Mbps down and 40Mbps up on LTE and pretty much had people refuse to believe me. The US is a country where many people think it's impressive if you get 10Mbps!

I agree we don't know how lucky we are. Even our pricing is pretty sharp compared to US. I think kiwis like complaining.

Our capped data plans aren't too shabby.

Theres no option for uncapped mobile data here though like there is over there - which is probably why theirs is so damn congested.

I just had a check of the Telstra prices in Australia, $55 per month on an open plan and you end up with a piddly 500MB of data; we've got it pretty damn good here with the added bonus that unlike the United States customers are dictated to whether they can and cannot tether their phone or have their phones operating system completely butchered as with the case of Verizon (that doesn't even start with the delays that carriers impose on OEM's when it comes to Android and Windows Phone OS upgrades and updates).

NZ is pretty good compared to Australia as well espcially on the prepay side of things..

The vast majority of people think they pay to much for a substandard product in both mobile and fixed line broadband. It really shows the narrow minded kiwi mentality of joining the bandwagon and bashing companies, products and services without actually understanding how superior our products are to many markets overseas.
