RNC's aren't like a dual hotswap PSU's in a PC. They can't easily be made redundant.
If an RNC fails it will take out service to all Node B's that run off that RNC. The reality is they are a piece of core network that simply isn't supposed to fail but both Telecom and Vodafone have had RNC failures along with many other telcos around the world.
The key question is why the RNC is failing...

I am in hamilton and my mobile on the xt network wouldn't work at all for incoming, outgoing calls and data after lunchtime today..
skewt: still intermittent connection for me in Dunedin
connects but no calls, txt, data, restarting gets it going again for a short time before i have to restart again
