They said it was restored at 1pm today ... and it wasn't.

Just boils down to the fact that Telecom is just an untrustworthy company with a 3G network that was poorly planned without redundancy.

RNC's aren't like a dual hotswap PSU's in a PC. They can't easily be made redundant.

If an RNC fails it will take out service to all Node B's that run off that RNC. The reality is they are a piece of core network that simply isn't supposed to fail but both Telecom and Vodafone have had RNC failures along with many other telcos around the world.

The key question is why the RNC is failing...

They said on the news it was just south of taupo as well.
I am in hamilton and my mobile on the xt network wouldn't work at all for incoming, outgoing calls and data after lunchtime today..

It was a Vodafone sabotage device

still intermittent connection for me in Dunedin
connects but no calls, txt, data, restarting gets it going again for a short time before i have to restart again

I think last time the fact that there is only 1 RNC for that Geographic area was discussed. If Vodafone can have 6 then surely a new network wanting 2 million people on it within 3 years would aim to do the same thing??? Whats the reasoning??? cost cutting?

Under a localized or provincial RNC set up, If only CHCH or Dunedin went out, it would be a pain but not the entire southisland and most of north island. Surely this would make sense.

Very troubling!

Very hard indeed. It's serious when a fault takes down their network. More troubling when it happens more than once.

Hamilton here also and no problems at all. Been texting and receiving/making calls throughout the day. Data has been fine too.

It must of been where we were in hamilton, I'm up at the hospital and none of the XT phones onsite worked.
The old cdma network was fine though.
