PaulBrislen: Actually I'd already told the journo Vodafone didn't have an official response. Quite why he decided to attribute those comments to Vodafone is beyond me.

I would like to apologise to Telecom and to Vodafone. It certainly isn't a corporate position.

What I said was that some of the best logos in the world are the simplest - designed to look like they would if you'd had a bottle of wine and got some crayons. McDonalds, Apple, Vodafone, Twitter, Facebook - they're recognisable from a distance because they're so simple.

Clearly something got lost in the translation.

Cheers

Paul

It makes sense and it's easy to understand. But when a newspaper asks a question to someone in your position the question will be loaded and they will post your name, employer and position there. You know journalists...

I just asked my daughter what she thought of it and what she thought it represented.
Her response was "Owwww, It's OOOOKKKK" (funny expression on her face)
"Looks like wires"

So theres a non tech, unbiased opinion.

freitasm: Interesting some of you guys saying it is a "kid's scribble"... Here is the official word, received in a press release just now:

“We’ve been speaking to customers who were strongly in favour of this new direction because of the freshness and commitment to change the new brand represents. So over the next few months you’ll see changes to our stores, websites, communications and advertising,” says Alan Gourdie, CEO Telecom Retail.

“The brand is designed to be less about us and more about our customers. Where previously it stood for telecommunications services, wires and networks, it now reflects New Zealanders doing what inspires them, and doing it on their terms,” says Mr Gourdie.

Damn, what a great big festering pile of PR bulldust.

FWIW, I think Telecom is doing great in the last few years.

My uncle moved from one side of Papakura to the other a couple of years ago. He is with Telstra residential. It took telecom over a month to get his new line hooked up, even though he is a member of St John's Lifelink and both him and my mum, who shares the apartment with him, have medical issues, including a severe heart condition, that Tel;ecom knew about but they just sat arouns with their heads up their rear ends. Strangey enough, about a week into this, he was promised the phone on next day if he switched back to Telecom. Unfortunately he was not recording the call so it cannot be legally proven.

Please don't tell me Telecom have been doing great for the last few years. They are as dodgy as ever.

kyhwana2: lol. It looks like a childs scribble. I wonder how much they spent on that?

Wonder the same thing and who will pay for it.  Of course the customers and tax payers in the way of a tax rite off.  Hope they paid the kids who designed this lots of money..

NonprayingMantis:

Think of some of the logos of the largest companies on the planet - some of the most recongnisable of them are incredibly simple and easy to reproduce.

The differences is the above logo's look professional whereas the Telecom logo looks like it was drawn by a two year old or at least a very untalented amatuer.

Please remember, that what you have said is only your personal opinion. It is a shame that your uncle and mom have had issues with Telecom, and believe me, I sympathise fully since I've had my fair share from other companies as well.
MF was simply saying (At least the way I interpreted it) was that Telecom in general have improved. You can't tarnish the company as a whole, based on only your experience.

In general, I have been hearing an increasingly positive attitude from older customers (and new customers) that are on, or have moved back to Telecom. (Broadband, Mobile and home phone)

I just realised what it reminded me of: Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions". Link, not for the easily offended I guess.

hellonearthisman: small image that's not a big one scaled #bandwidth
Telecoms new logo is a simple diagram to show how they will manage their operational separation.

Note the 3 different lines = 3 different parts.

As an aside it just shows how things travel on the Internet. This image is hosted somewhere else, but still bears the name I gave it when uploading to the Geekzone server last night. If you read the topic in this thread you will see a link to it on a much higher resolution and size.

I was going to hotlink to the one it your post hosted on Geekzone,  but it was too big and even if I scaled it, it would be a fat download. So I tossed a small copy onto photobucket as it's a little file.  It didn't go that far.

On topic,  I like the logo, The Pastel colours are so 80's  I am sure there is more behind the seen stuff of a brand than most people would see.  And it only cost (unknown - but it will be a personal best for telecom) and that will make tolls cheaper, reduce line rentals through a placebo effict.

Bottom line is Telecom is and will continue to get a lot of coverage out of this, good or bad. May my Telecom shares go through the roof...

I see. We actually have two pictures in the first post in this discussion. The one that's shown is a small one and right-click on it won't show its full URL because it's encoded. The other one it's being linked to is a high resolution version.

So we have two for you guys: https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/images/news/TelecomNZLarge.jpg is only 13 KBytes and used on the post and https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/images/news/TelecomNZNew.jpg is 928 KBytes and linked from the small one.

Read this. Other ISPs have this thing about blaming Telecom for anything - even if it's their own fault and Telecom is not involved at all. I am not saying it's TelstraClear's fault, but before going around blaming Telecom I would investigate and get all the information you can possibly collect about the problem.

In New Zealand you never deal with Telecom directly if you have an account with another ISP. If there's a fault it's up to the ISP to take Telecom up and request things to be done. Of course you never know if your ISP is doing their part and they can easily blame Telecom for anything.
