nitrotech:
The tech's at telecom

I think that's an oxymoron. They left years ago.

Getting heartily sick of the "Emerg. calls only" banners on our new phones!

Come on Telecom / Alcatel-Lucent - how much longer?

Anyone else getting the wrong alert on the telecom alert page?

I click on the link next to the red cross on the mobile service alert and it only goes to:

------
Broadband

* Issue: * Broadband Usage Meter
* Date: * 11 December 2009

Broadband Usage Meter - Service Temporarily Unavailable 10/12/09, 10am

This service is unavailable due to a technical issue, which our technicians are working to restore as a matter of priority. We will be keeping customers informed via this Service Status page. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
-----

Just as well I get FM radio to keep up with the status.

edit: now that is spooky, I check again 5 minutes later and they've fixed it up.

sbiddle:
Failure of a RNC is something that is the worst nightmare for a mobile operator. You can't simply easily have a backup RNC or a hot standby in case of a failure. Vodafone had several RNC failures earlier this year or late last year which affected the Auckland region.

sbiddle:
Presumably everywhere south of Taupo is on a single RNC.

A RNC can handle massive numbers of Node B's and simultaneous calls - many large cities around the world with populations bigger than NZ would only have a single RNC handing things.

Sounds to me like Vodafone has some good redundancy if they have several RNC's on hand where as Telecom has a single one for the majority of the country.
I could understand if a particular area of the country went down, but if one RNC serves most of us then would it not make sense to implement more?

I'd suggest that VF's network isn't hugely more redundant than Telecom's... but I may be wrong.

Either way, whatever is wrong with the "south of Taupo" part of XT is seriously frustrating. Reminds me why I still have two phones...

Regardless of the what happened, or why, it is simply unacceptable for a national carrier such as Telecom to have a network that is this unreliable.

In our case not only are mobile communications mission critical they are LIFE critical. There should be no way a failure on ANY piece of equipment can have downstream effects such as this.

XT has been over-hyped and over sold as the magic bullet for mobile communications.

Our experience to date on XT has been rather lack lustre.

We have experienced several complete outages, numerous smaller issues and ongoing issues with slow delivery of txt messages both intra and inter-network...

Quite frankly, if this is the state of the art in mobile networks then consumers have been grossly misled as o the availability and preformance of XT.

No excuses Telecom, it is YOUR fault, you are the carrier, you are the maintainers of the equipment, you perform the upgrades, we as consumers sit here and wait.... The promised calls from Account managers have not been received and the status page is long overdue for an update. (10:53am) was the last update.

Simply not good enough Telecom.

While I agree, and don't take this as offense, but surely if your comms are life critical you would have rather serious redundancy?

i agree i dont mean to stirr but in case if something is "life critical" then you should always have redundancy, and im not just talking about comms, if you cannot live without power then you need to have a backup ... its fairly logical ... comms is one of the cheaper things to have a backup of.
