The tech's at telecom
sbiddle:
Failure of a RNC is something that is the worst nightmare for a mobile operator. You can't simply easily have a backup RNC or a hot standby in case of a failure. Vodafone had several RNC failures earlier this year or late last year which affected the Auckland region.
sbiddle:
Presumably everywhere south of Taupo is on a single RNC.
A RNC can handle massive numbers of Node B's and simultaneous calls - many large cities around the world with populations bigger than NZ would only have a single RNC handing things.
neverland: still no service in Christchurch round the University... my phone battery is going flat pretty fast.
My Vodafone system is alive an well :) :)
martinschcnz: Regardless of the what happened, or why, it is simply unacceptable for a national carrier such as Telecom to have a network that is this unreliable.
In our case not only are mobile communications mission critical they are LIFE critical. There should be no way a failure on ANY piece of equipment can have downstream effects such as this.

Simply not good enough Telecom.

While I agree, and don't take this as offense, but surely if your comms are life critical you would have rather serious redundancy?
