Kirdog: LOL, telecom VDSL modem has been arrived to me today, but my connection declined.

Can i leave it with me or i need to return it?

(:

I saw it now :) it's possibly best to phone up and say it had arrived else you'll risk getting charged for it, sorry dude, nothing's free haha

Hi,

I got the following rough figures from Telecom before they do the VDSL thing on Friday...

line Attenuation= 10 - 16 dB
download Rate= VDSL2: 0 - 17.3 Mb/s
upload Rate= VDSL2: 0 - 5.9 Mb/s

- they're less than awesome (as expected given likely cabinet distance) but was actually wondering if there was any way to get (slightly) more accurate figures ?

Thanks

The only real way to get accurate figures is to get VDSL installed on the line. There are so many factors involved that anything else is simply an educated guess.

A wee update - VDSL install happened Friday afternoon.

22Mbs down and 9.8Mbs up compared to 12Mbs down and 0.9Mbs up on ADSL. So effectively twice as fast down and ten times as fast up. That makes it worth it in my book, especially as I'm often having to upload massive graphics files to Dropbox and via YouSendIt and such.

I haven't attempted any demanding streaming as yet but on the test results so far, it should be a doddle. The latency is 22ms and it's pretty much constant.

Happiness is rife here in R2 land. :-)

My modem has not resync for four days now so may be the training period is completed.

My downstream attenuation is 6.1dB and syncing at just under 48Mbps. Just wonder anyone out there syncing more than 50Mbps with an attenuation of 6.1dB or higher (downstream of course).

Just want to know with a 6.1dB attenuation, am I likely to get the 17a profile?

Thanks!

Don't know whether others are experiencing this as well but I have been bumped down the waiting list 3 times. I called and got told VDSL would be connected 31 July, then I get a text yesterday saying it will be connected 1 Aug and now I get a text saying 2 Aug. I call up Telecom and they say it could change again. Tell them I'm not happy and explain circumstances but I got snapped at. Not cool. Anyone going through this kind of stuff? How long did it take you to get connected? Pretty frustrating since I'm currently in Auckland and need to travel down to Wellington to make sure I am there in time for the VDSL tech but keep getting told different dates. I travel a lot for work so this is driving me a bit nuts.

Anyone with other VDSL providers or can give me feedback on them?

Thanks :)

That's a bit odd - to me, at least. I can only see it should happen if they are having particular trouble with jobs ahead of you taking longer than planned or requiring revisits. My install date was originally 18th July but got brought forward to the 16th, so I had the opposite. Sorry :( Maybe one of the Telecom guys can shed some light for you (michaelmurfy is awesomely helpful).

Hi Keeza,

I can advise you that delays to connections in the Wellington area are being caused by the recent earthquakes. All the exchange buildings were locked down by Chorus pending an inspection of their structural integrity. For their own safety, the technicians have been unable to access the exchanges until they are deemed safe, and this has taken time to complete.

This has had a knock on effect as a lot of orders have had to be rescheduled (eg - orders due 22/07 going ahead 24/07, therefore orders originally scheduled 24/07 pushed out to 26/07 etc). This has affected any order where the technician has required access to the Wgtn exchanges.

I know that is frustrating but it was unforeseeable and out of Chorus' control. This will have affected orders with all service providers.

If you PM me your details I can look into your individual case.

Thanks,
Simon

After 10 days of excellent VDSL performance, today I haven't even got a broadband/DSL light on my Technicolor VDSL modem.

Called faults, have to wait 24 hours for a technician to visit. Frustrated now.

Can't understand what has gone wrong.

Where do you live ? If it's Wellington your line might be down from the quake or getting repaired.

Hi,

The Chorus guy has been today and installed the master splitter and a new dedicated socket.

However my speeds aren't great (15 down and less than 1 up). I don't know much about these things but notice that the downstream attenuation is 22.5 which seems very high? I was getting 1 up and 13.5 down on ADSL and browsing the internet actually seems slower!

I'm guessing the downstream attenuation must have been lower when the pre=qual was done, so do I infer from this that somehow the Chorus chap has made things worse?

One thing I now find handy with vdsl that hadn't occurred to me before.

Streaming content from my home nas to wherever I am utilising the 9Mbps upload I now have
. I have heaps of content I have 'acquired'. Now when I am away, at a friends house or hotel, then provided the downstream connection there is ok, I can stream all my content. That will come in handy over the holidays or on any business trips.

If you were only getting 13.5 down on ADSL2, I'm surprised they went ahead with the VDSL install, must've suspected internal wiring. The speed crossover point between VDSL2/ADSL2 is typically around the 15Mbps mark, so it may be a case of you being just a bit too far, really. Perhaps one of the Telecom chaps around can check specifics. Some people with 12 - 13 mbps on ADSL2 have ended up with around 30mbps on VDSL2, so it really is hard to judge. That attenuation is very high though.

VDSL got connected today!

I'm very happy with the results.

Not sure if there may be a few too may FEC errors? If anyone could comment?

On the Chorus service side. Was very impressed. The chap (Graeme) was here for about 2 hours, as we have a plethora of phone outlets in our house (we only use one :) ). He had to cut and re wire a few connections (I offered to crawl under the house to run cables as I was a bit more knowledgeable about where all the rooms were :) . But all was up and running in no time. Thanks Graeme!
