Its 5:30am, I live 50 metres from the exchange, and I'm getting 8.5% of normal speed.

Either there are network issues, which aren't being reported on the status page (and should be) or Telecom are throttling in off-peak hours.

All I want is my connection from 2 weeks ago back. Its not like its imaginery, it was 2 weeks ago and everything worked. If I didn't have exams next week I'd fight it and raise a fuss. Maybe after.

Shaping is applied 24/7, its just normally not noticable outside peak hours.

News to me.  I was told that traffic management does not apply between the hours of 2AM and 8AM or off-peak.  That is how it is pitched on their website too.  So isn't that false advertising if what you say is true?

It's all clearly stated on the website...

from https://www.telecom.co.nz/broadband/select/1,10627,205728-204466,00.html?action=/plan&detail=17#traffic_management

"Traffic Management - We don't place an artificial cap on the download or upload speed on the majority of the internet activity our customers have on this plan. But because it has no fixed data allowance, we do manage all the traffic on it to optimise the experience for everyone on the plan. When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds, in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing traffic and online gaming. "

(Bold added by me)

The official website and T&Cs for the plan are better sources of info than forums in most cases.

Cheers - N

Video for BigTime
Chapter: TRAFFIC Management:

"During the not so busy times which is between 2AM and 9AM, it doesn't matter where you're headed or what you want to do. Traffic management won't apply."

This is where my confusion was sparked.

Does that mean the rules are relaxed at 2AM?

Not necessarily. This info and link have been repeated here many times but people ignore what they don't want to see.

When I hear "Traffic management won't apply" I think: "They switch it off." If he said "Traffic management is significantly less between the hours of 2AM and 9AM.", I would understand. But I guess that doesn't get the perk of the plan across very well.

Huh. Your right - He clearly says "Traffic Management won't apply". Although I notice in the text around it, it never mentions that. I suspect the video is old, and needs to be updated, yes?

Fair comment... Here's the accurate interpretation...

Having spoken to the PM who authorises changes to the traffic management, there is currently no authorised Bigtime traffic management between 2am and 9am. There may be other reasons why performance during that window might not be as fast as people may wish for, but it shouldn't be the Bigtime traffic management policy.

The over-riding statement from the text of the Bigtime T&Cs though is that Telecom MAY shape any traffic at any time. We simply have to have that catch-all after the GoLarge problems.

So the video is correct at the moment, Traffic Management doesn't apply from 2am-9am.

Cheers - N

(note: I had an incorrect response up here for about 1 minute until I got it confirmed by the PM so I deleted my incorrect response)

Thanks. In this case Telecom screwed up.

it looked like that to me initially as well, but it turns out the video accurately represents Bigtime TODAY. The written T&Cs leave us scope to manage traffic whenever necessary however.
