simplestuff: VDSL had mine installed two weeks ago. They finally got me up to 16.2 download and 1.2 upload. (after visits from a chorus technician who
tested my speed at the nearest mushroom
I am about 950 metres from the exchange Is that too far. I keep dropping my connection every few minutes and have
to either reset my computer or disable the network adapter and re-enable it. Not quite driving me mad but getting close.
Looking like I will have to return to ADSL. Comments welcome

Hmm, well the typical cutoff point for VDSL2 would be about 1km or so, so you're pretty close to it. In ideal conditions it can go a bit further (about 1.6km), but real-world is usually far from ideal. I'd say you may just be too far - if you're only getting 1.2Mbps upstream it probably implies your line simply is not coping, as the upstream is usually impacted far less than downstream.

skwo: Hi,

Got my VDSL installed last Wednesday. Speed has changed - around 5 mbps download speed improvement, and no change in upload speed compared to my old ADSL.  I've also been getting random spikes while gaming since the installation, which has been an absolute pain. Old ADSL connection was stable, with no spikes - even on wireless.

Would the low download bandwidth (20mbps) be due to the house not having CAT5 cables? The Chorus installation technician mentioned that I may have to replace my entire wiring to CAT5, for which I wasn't prepared to do during the time of installation. I have tried the factory resetting the modem - no change. I am 600m from the exchange (according to Chorus tech).

Here are my line details, straight off the gateway:

Uptime: 5 days, 18:11:11

DSL Type: ITU-T G.993.2

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 10,354 / 19,366

Cheers.

You shouldn't need all internal wiring CAT5, as long as the wiring you do have is in good condition (it's probably cat3?). Anything internal that is not on the VDSL-side of the splitter should be irrelevant anyway. I notice you say no change in upload speed comapred to ADSL, yet your line stats show ~10Mbps upstream sync - which is about 7 times what ADSL2 will manage. Perhaps you're on the wrong profile or something, as a few others have been?

Have you tried telecom.co.nz/speedtest or any real-world speed tests?

I assume you're testing via Ethernet, not wireless?

Thanks for the reply.

This is my ethernet speedtest result:

Upload speed hasn't changed from ADSL. Constant 1.0mbps up since installation date. Would I need to switch the wires to get at least 30mbps down?

Cheers

When did Chorus do the VDSL2 install?

Can you post your line stats?

If your line stat said you are on "DSL Type: ITU-T G.993.2", you are on a VDSL2 connection.  However, from the speed test, looks like you are still on a ADSL2+ profile.

Interesting.  Can you do a speedtest from speedtest.orcon.net.nz (yes, orcon) via ethernet and post the result?

Thanks for the reply. Chorus did the install last Wednesday. My house doesn't have CAT5 cables, which may be the problem (according to Chorus installation technician).

After I get my VDSL connected next Monday, what happens if I connect  an old fashioned ADSL2+ modem to the line?

I setup and test a variety of ADSL2+ modems at times, and wondered if I can still do so? Will my line fall back to ADSL or is this a one way trip?

Secondly, once Telneted into the new Technicolor TG589nn v2 modem, how do I know which DLM profile I'm on as the week progresses?
