Spong: Just thinking ahead to when my first VDSL outage occurs, has anyone had any success with 3G dongles working with the Technicolor TG589vn v2?

Telecom's site mentions a few, but the link incorrectly refers to the TG582n/TG797n at: http://help.telecom.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/20047

I have a couple of MF636 dongles that don't work, but do work standalone.

I'll ask the product guy, it doesn't seems to list the supported models in the manual.

I would have thought the MF636 was supported, plus I remember there was a command in the Telnet interface you could list all supported devices (which I can't find for the life of me) but will see if I can find out.

Ive been connected since 17th july and i am glad to say im on the DLM - 1 with 40/10 sync, probably no 17a profile but still happy. I am 100m away from cabinet

I think some people are expecting too much when their line is over 400m away

I wonder if now will be "as good as it gets". At the moment I expect most of those getting the VDSL service are those who frequent Geekzone- the technically literate early adopter types. But I do wonder if, when the general public moves more onto VDSL, the overall noise floor will rise on the copper and the data rate to each individual will be less due to crosstalk.

I am 900m away apparently and I am getting 27/9. I started with 25/9 so something has been doing its thing and has improved my speeds. Happy with that instead of the 11/0.7 I was getting before.

How would that work though? You do not share the copper with anyone else to your property, right? You are fibre from the cabinet back to the exchange.

No, but you still get crosstalk between pairs in the cable. With larger multipairs it isn't practical to vary the twist rate to a significant degree. Just like people on country lines hear chatter...

I finally worked out the admin login to my modem and my attenuation is 12/5 which is making me slightly nervous that Chorus will show up and decline my application.

That said, my modem is currently connected to a jack that is an extension from the original split jack in another room, so that's probably degrading the signal somewhat. I've had a look outside and can see where the line comes up from underground, it's been cut as it pops out the top of the pipe and there's a tangle of exposed wiring and a couple of connectors that I think Sky are responsible for when they installed MySky some years back. That tangle splits off to the main phone in the living room, the phone jack behind the telly that got put in with the sky decoder and a third line that runs upstairs (which is the one that's then split for broadband into two jackpoints in the bedroom).

Would I benefit from having the VDSL splitter installed on one of the living room points? And can I ask the Chorus tech to sort out what looks like a bit of a bodgy job done by the Sky tech?

The splitter will mean you have a dedicated socket for your broadband connection that you can't move (without getting the Chorus tech back to move it!) and all the other jackpoints in your house are isolated from your broadband connection. Thus you won't need those annoying in-line filters any more.

When the tech turns up they will find the ETP (the point that the big black cable comes in from the outside of the house) put a master filter / splitter there, then run a new cable for the "dsl" side of the splitter to your dedicated VDSL jackpoint. All the rest of your internal wiring should run off the "phone" side of the splitter, and then you are away :).

That's one of the reasons why Chorus have attenuation limits in place, UBPO will hopefully minimise the issues of this happening but it certainly is a very valid real world issue.

In my personal experience as a telecommunications tech who has cleaned up after sky installers too many times, you should never let sky touch your phone wiring, and if they have, get a real telecomms tech to check it over. Yes, perhaps you can ask chorus, but you may be charged extra for the work.

Best place for the splitter is where the wiring enters the house.

Ah, thank you! I didn't realise that the VDSL install included putting a master splitter on the line as it comes into the property. I thought they'd be splitting one of the internal phone jackpoints like they did when we first got "JetStart" installed many moons ago. I assume then that I can decide where they put the VSDL jack that leads off the broadband line from the master splitter? Currently the modem is in the rumpus room upstairs, but I think I'd rather it sat with the AV gear in the living room.

And, yes, I'd be reluctant to let Sky touch my wiring - I never even knew they would do that when MySky got installed. The last dude that came out (to run my Sky feed to an upstairs bedroom) couldn't get the Freeview to also go through to that TV, then gave me his personal card and suggested I get him back to install a signal booster. After he left I checked the little box he'd added to the decoder and discovered he'd plugged all the cables in wrong. I fixed it myself, instant Freeview. I'm not sure if he was up to something dodgy or just didn't know what he was doing.

Or possible he was being conscious of the budget for the job... My employer charges me out at $78+GST per hour, so doing a lot of fiddling can get very expensive, and sometimes it's easier to take a guess that a $50-$100 box will fix everything.

This does sound like a bit of an oversight though

I do appreciate that the signal booster was outside of the scope of the job, and I would have been totally happy to get someone in separately if necessary, but it was the fact that it wasn't even required in the first place that made me a little put out. I'm lucky that I have a modicum of technical knowledge or I would have ended up spending quite a bit of unnecessary money.

I'm getting quite excited about my VDSL now. I'm currently using a Linksys ADSL2 modem and a Time Capsule with Airport router for my network at home (I have a Mac as my main computer). I'm keen to investigate using the Airport to extend the wireless signal, as it can be a bit weak in certain parts of my multi-storey dwelling. Install is booked for next Tuesday morning. *\O/*

Interestingly, my modem has done a resync from DLM2 to DLM2 again, but the speed jumped all the way from 42Mbps to 50Mbps. It's purely academic as my actual throughput still seems to be getting nothing more than about 28-30Mbps at best (even when downloading an ISO from a local server), but interesting.

Downstream INP and delay are 0 and 7 respectively (does this qualify as DLM2 or 1!?)
Upstream is 1 and 16 respectively, so a fair disparity between the two. Upstream speed is good for just over 1MB/sec regardless.

1st hop ping time seems to be sitting on 27-28ms.

@littleheaven - An Airport unit (Express or Extreme) works very well as a simple wireless extender unit. I'm using an Express for the job at home, and we've got 3-4 Express's and a couple of Extreme's in the office as AP's\Extenders.
