lolcano: Still no calling or txt for me in South Christchurch. Expecting some serious free credit or calling from the big man!!!!

Last time it happened they gave all telecom customers free calling to any telecom phone for the weeked,it better happen agian!!!!!!!!!!!

bradstewart: Interestingly there didnt seem to be any outage here in Dunedin. I've been using my phone continously for the last couple of hours including calls to others around the area on XT.
@bbman - "Telecoms XT core network is continually failing" seems to be a little bit over the top. I recall only one major disruption to the network during the day before this.

I compare this to the Vodafone service I can't get any at all... Sitting in my office in a CBD building where there are THREE vodafone stores and not a single bar of reception on two different phones. I'll take XT and it's very occasional outage any day.

how far are the 3 vodafone stores away from your cbd building? what street is your cbd building on? is there reception outside your building?

i wonder if vodafone actually own their own stores including the building because if they do it would be very easy to put up a cell site on it wouldn't it?

We know which piece of equip if faulty and have escalated this to manufacturer to resolve. It's the restoring service once the equip goes faulty that takes the time and theres no way to predict/prevent fault occuring. FYI, it's actually a different piece of equip than the December outage but with an associated function within the node known as the RNC.

Can we assume Telecom will setup more RNC's so if there is another equipment failure then the impact zone is reduced?

I am so over XT!

Would there still be an outage if it was effecting customers north of Taupo?

I'm sure the 3 % of the country that XT doesn't get coverage is all here in Southland as I constantly have reception issues and when I do get reception I seem to have handset issues. Give me CDMA anyday.

And it's still down here in sleepy little Invercargill!

I'm going to be talking to my employer about going Vodafone. I've had it with this supposed 'world class mobile network'. Nearly 12 hours now. I've missed important calls in relation to projects, and one was critical. Way to go Telecom! >:(

just curious here,
would it have made any difference if XT fell back to a GSM network when 3G goes down or wouldn't it make any difference ?

I think you mean should we have built two networks. One from 20yr old technology and one from 3G technology.

And Paul Reynolds announced an "independent" review:

Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds announced today that in addition to capacity and design improvements already being worked on, he has commissioned an independent review on the XT network.

“XT has grown extremely rapidly to serve hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders. I am angry at the recent outages that have affected parts of the network, including one this morning,” Dr Reynolds said.

“I apologise to our customers who have been inconvenienced, but also recognise that words are not enough. That’s why we are taking rapid action and I am determined to be up front and open with our loyal XT customers on this.

“XT is built as a world-class network but clearly it should not have had these problems.

“With our technology and operations partner Alcatel-Lucent, we have already been working on capacity and design improvements to protect customers.

“I have today commissioned an urgent and independent review to ensure we have taken all reasonable steps to assure customer experience.

“As we continue to implement the improvements already identified, we expect customers to see a much improved performance in XT,” Dr Reynolds said.

They could pay big bucks to vodafone to allow roaming on their network when its down im guessing.
YEAH RIGHT lol,
nah probably better off fixing what they got properly...

If you have to run heating in winter, you don’t own enough computers.
