nitrotech: It's nothing to do with the global gateway - I got sick of the speeds so changed to the pro plan and guess what my speeds are now impressive, check the screen shots earlier compared to this over 1mbps

Hmm, makes it look like there is some traffic shaping occuring during offpeak hours then for those on BigTime.

I want to believe its the global gateway. However, GMail seems to work in regular mode rather than HTML now.

For now anyway...

This is becoming very interesting, surprised a telecom rep hasn't said anything to be honest.

Perhaps because people in NZ have come to expect crap service from ISPs, and, unlike the XT issues, the media hasn't picked up on this yet.

The media dosn't care.  XT was widespread and businesses were involved as well as emergency services.  BigTime just dosn't cut it for the 6 o'clock news.

I signed up to add my frustrations to this thread too. When I spoke to Xtra tech support about the issue they told me I'm pretty much going to have to expect this kind of shaping during peak hours. Since the https and off peak downloading issues seem to have been fixed, I figure the peak time issues are due to traffic shaping alone and not some technical fault... so we might be stuck with it. David, where did you get that info about the global gateway?

Here.

One of the Telecom reps uncovered a problem a few weeks.  A memory leak in the global gateway is causing Telecom to redirect traffic elsewere.  At least that is what I think is still happening.  There has been no word on the status of the repair.  It could all ready be fixed.

The company I used to work for have reported that they are getting a lot of calls about poor internet from other ISPs as well as Xtra.  I don't know what is going on.

The Telecom guy I spoke with this morning had no information about the global gateway issue, it was the first he had heard about it, so either its a fabrication or Telecom isn't lettings its frontline staff know, I'm thinking more likely the latter. I let him know about the thread here so hopefully he'll be a bit more informed and hopefully, for the sake of all their frontline staff, he can work out why they aren't being told about issues.

As for the previous comment about off peak being ok, it certainly isn't ok for me, going at 5% normal speeds compared to three weeks ago when I've tried each morning.

Now, if I understand correctly, during offpeak hours the speed received by BigTime and the other plans should be the same, or is there another factor that I'm overlooking? I'm thinking contention ratios in each area shouldn't matter, but could there possibly have been a reduction in  bandwidth dedicated to BigTime?

Please, I have corrected this a couple of times at least. It is not, and was never, a "memory leak". That was an early theory that proved to be incorrect. Please don't spread this incorrect information any further.

And no, I can't tell you exactly what was wrong, because while I have a good idea, I do not have the official answer and I am not going to spread information which could be incorrect.

Cheers - N

Sorry must have missed the correction.  It is still dog slow though. :(

I'd say that there is traffic shaping 24/7 - after 2am there is no speed change; the speed goes up and down during the day from one extreme to another. Its clear to me that 'Big Time' is a big time fraud to get the customers in through the door in a contract and once they're hooked, they so bound into a contract all they have as an option is to change to one of the capped plans. Pretty pathetic - and not a single Telecom person so far on this forum have done a single thing to rectify the problem. I hope that Telecom isn't allowed within a 100km radius of the new fibre network planned - they've clearly demonstrated that they're pathetically incompetent.

That statement is simply incorrect.  This thread has done wonders for the BigTime plan.  The Telecom representitives have been using their own time to help us out.  I believe Telecom has a genuine interest in making the plan better.  But if people keep posting like this, as stated before we will run them off and we will no longer have the kind of communication with Telecom broadband representitives as we do now.

Come on mate,  "This thread has done wonder for the BigTime plan" - what has it done? come on, point me to a single issue that has been resolved. I'm still downloading at 5KB/s, just as I was a week ago, a month ago and a month ago before that. Nothing has changed or improved since this 'communication' has begun. It make give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling knowing you're hopefully communicating with someone at Telecom Borg HQ, but for me as much as a conversation in a forum gets me all excited, I want to see some results. I want to be able to download at 30KB/s during a peak period - when I can pull 30KB/s minimum off a high profile website - then I'll know that Telecom has got its act together.

The reaction by you to my post sounds like a battered wife syndrome; scared if you stand up to them that they might leave. How the heck can him leaving make the situation any worse given that nothing has been done as of yet to address the problems so far. All I've seen from the local rep is post after post of hand wringing and nothing actually being done to fix the problem.

A single issue?

Hell, I can give you a personal one. This thread is over 70 pages long dude. My interleaving was fixed because of a Telecom rep on this forum. I battled with Telecom on the phone over interleaving for a month. It got sorted here over night when I posted that the help desk was not helpful!

Traffic rules were created to identify packets comming from games being accidentally shaped...because of this forum.
If you read the whole thing (which i doubt you have) you will see what has been fixed and the new issues that have risen within the past three weeks.

Also, as noted by a Telecom guy before, this isn't a Telecom forum and all information about issues should be reported to Telecom. Not that that has done much in regards to the current problem, but we shouldn't expect Telecom to make changes because of postings in this forum.

Though they have in the past and they have our thanks for that :) Just hope we can get this current issue sorted.
