I don't see "stacks" of phones that support GSM 850/900 as well as WCDMA 2100 in there... but the Nokia N95 is one.

Then the "best-seller" phone for Telecom will be the N95.

A locked phone for $99 with a 2 years contract. :)

Um beg to differ, go to Vodafone NZ's handset selection http://store.vodafone.co.nz/mobile_search_result.aspx?brand=0&price=0&features=-1 of the first 7 models on the this link, only 2 do not support 850mhz!!!

I would havre to say TNZ are going to have a real edge come launch and this is why Vodafone are getting cagey on roaming and also sim locking. This is going to be an interesting 12 mths.

Talk is that TNZ may start selling handsets as early as January depending on what infrastructure they have in place. I wouls ay more like march April. just in time for CDMA shut down in Aussie.

Wonder what the Knockia N95 is like? Their PR people here aren't great with review gear (usually ends up with journos who don't try out half the stuff), so don't expect I'll ever see one.

Whoops, that's off topic. Appoloogies.

You need all three bands - 850, 900 and 2100MHz.

There are plenty of quad band GSM handsets around, there just aren't large numbers of quad band GSM + WCDMA handsets on the market yet. Quite a few of of the newer Nokia WCDMA handsets are but most other manufacturers are simply building tri band GSM + 2100MHz UMTS devices.

Freakin Computer!!!

Anyway, for GSM only it doesn't matter, but there are more and more handsets coming with 2100mhz WCDMA with the 3 bands of GSM. TNZ will set it up no doubt that online services are available on EDGE data as well as WCDMA.

Hmmm.. All i can say is TNZ dealers are salavating with the handset possibilities they will have !!! finally

Does any one know the average speeds and Theoretical Maximum speeds of EDGE? Surely it would be equal if not better than the current CDMA 1xRTT offering? I would also expect WCDMA coverage to be equal if not better in foot print to CDMA EVDO.

oh and dont forget the Apple I Phone, 850 mhz GSM plus EDGE, not WCDMA. it does 900 mhz GSM but obviously EDGE networks will be preffered, atleast until they bring out a WCDMA version. TNZ possibly unless a major change happens will get this first if it comes to NZ.

I guess may be TNZ could have some handset firsts. A whole new ball park for TNZ.

It may change, but the plan at this stage for Telecom is to do voice on UMTS 2100 in town. Not 850MHz.

Um in Aussie, the answer is no to WCDMA being better than EVDO or 1xRTT, well thats unless you listen to the Telstra spin. Real users in Aussie reckon EVDO coverage is still better and 1xrtt is much better in a lot of places still.

EVDO in NZ is awesome so it is unlikely to be as good at least not yet, TNZ are also likely to cover the whole foot print with REV A by mid next year which will for some time out perform WCDMA 900 / 850, may be speeds may be better on 850/900 in close proximity to cell but thats yet to be proven, EVDO is proven in NZ hence why TNZ is still rolling it out and why they dont want to roll out WCDMA 850 just yet.

Rev C is still in the pipeline, TNZ will most likey use EVDO for broadband coverage for next few years, makes sense if they have the gear and the foot print.

No Rev B and C says Telecom, but LTE instead.

well you never know, they have been known to change there mind but if they are talking up a best broadband solution, GSM with EDGE is not going to cut it. either they leave EVDO rev a at all sites and do not further upgrades and if they see the growth, roll out 850mhz WCDMA HSPA and LTE etc from there.

They must still be operating a 850mhz GSM network in the cities as well as 2100MHZ, if they want the roaming dollar they will.
