NonprayingMantis: In an alternate Universe, Snap was actually called Spark, and Telecom has just renamed itself Snap.
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Snap, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like something is snapped in half and broken hahaha"
In another alternative universe, Orcon was actually called Spark, and Telecom has renamed itself Orcon
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Orcon, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like a Fantasy race in Lord of the Rings"
In another alternative universe, Vodafone was actualy called Spark, and Telecom has renamed itself Vodafone
Cue posters/comments on nbr/stuff saying
"Lol, Vodafone, what a ridiculous name. Sounds like an STD helpline!"
etc
etc
I guess my point is that a name is what you make it, and plenty of successful businesses have names that, out of context, can sound silly, especially when they change it from something people are familiar with.
Brands seem to go for either go for a simple descriptive fact based name e.g. Air New Zealand, Watercare, Telecom New Zealand, Bigpipe, Netflix (it's like going to the flicks, but on the net!!) etc or go for something that doesn't mean anything specific to most people (it might have some obscure meaning that most people don't know), but they hope will evoke the right 'feeling' with their customers e.g. Google, Snap, Genesis, Orcon..... and Spark.
Just my opinion. :P
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

mattwnz:That said, how many times have they changed the branding of their mobile network over the years. I don't even know what it is currently called. Is it 'The Smarter Network' still?
Buzz Bumble: Oh goody. Some lazy brainless twit in management can't think of anything actuallt sensible or useful to do, so turns to the old "let's change the name" complete waste of time and money ... and no doubt they will get a "bonus" for it as well. :-\ The only "spark" need is the one to light the fuse to the dynamite barrel under their chair.

PaulBags: On sparkshould.co.nz peoples suggestions get cut off if they're longer than one line, and it's impossible to downvote telecom answers despite the button being there.
Poorly executed propaganda controlled "suggestions" arn't a good sign.
To be fair, I have not yet seen any 'suggestions' worth more than a line so far. So much bile and hate - so utterly pointless. By next month, people will have their civic sense of indignation inflamed by and riled up about something else and Spark will be old news, just something a company decided to name themselves.

I take you are a senior executive of a 20,000 staff corporation, I am sure Spark would love your wealth of experience.
What does the FUG say about insults etc

It seems anyone can be an exec these days... so doesn't count for much.
Golden handshake here, buddy helping there... POOF! another unintelligible <expletive> running a company.
