wratterus:

Just set one of these up today for the first time.

Really nice device & like the UI - quick and clean.

Band steering seems to work well.

Thanks. UI will change at some stage though, that's the stock firmware with a few changed images. There is a more customer friendly UI on it's way later down the track.

As a techy you are likely happy with the current one though :)

wratterus:

Few thoughts - why is AES + TKIP still the default option for 2.4GHz? Everything really should be WPA2-AES only these days surely.

Comparability is my understanding. Fair question though, Will Ask :)

wratterus:

Being forced to change the login password to something complex is a bit of a pain. I know it's good for security etc etc but for the average home user it's unnecessary and a pain as they are pretty much guaranteed to forget the password, meaning a factory reset is required next time someone wants to change a wireless password or something simple. As long as the routers ship nice and secure from the WAN side IMO there is no need to force a PW change - the other option would be to ship with a random password that does meet the requirements and print this on the back of the router like the wireless password is.

Security Requirement.

wratterus:

Also I noticed there seems to be an unsecured "SPARK_FON" SSID broadcasting from somewhere - didn't have time to look into this further but is that coming from the ONT? First 6 digits of the MAC are 72:86:20. Not much of a fan of that if it is the case.

Please flick me the details of your device, i'll double check this. it should be disabled.

kobiak: Are there reviewers/testers required :p

:)

Considering the volume of units out there already, Probably not :P

Your not the first to ask me though. I'm pretty sure internally I've heard every spin as to why someone should 'test' a unit.

Thankfully I'm not one of the business people who those answers are left with.

I'd be more keen to hear reviews past initial launch pains to be honest :)

Is this thread still on?

Ive just received my smart modem today in preparation for fibre being installed. I’m planning to use mesh wifi (Orbi rbk50) so need to turn wifi off on spark modem. The previous modem had a wifi button to turn wifi off. Does the button on the side do this or do have go into the settings? Also is there a full manual for it?

There is a button on the lefthand backside.

This modem is better than the Orbi mesh though...

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

One of the reasons for the Orbi is to extend outside to garage.

Give it a chance first before writing if off. Seems like they've chosen a decent one.

Mesh is bad and you sacrifice bandwidth and latency sometimes un-neccessarily. Live with weak signal strength if it works rather than a strong repeated signal.

Yeah fair enough. The specs look good. I was planning to have this in a cupboard and use mesh.  But it is worth trying before spending the bucks on mesh.

The wifi button...press and hold for a while to turn off/on wifi?

Just a wee note .. I really want to discourage the use of out-of-date SMB.

This post makes it pretty clear why SMB v1 should not be out there anymore. And note it's from 2016!

@hio77 Any chance we could see a 6in4 tunnel on this device at some stage? I reliase it's probably not a common use case but I think it's the only feature I need on my old router still. Ideally with an on/off switch for RA. I do testing with Hurricane Electric IPv6 tunnels to get the certifiacte and the nice t-shirt.

Plus some pretty utilisation graphs but thats a nice to have rather than a necessity :-)

Or Spark could support IPv6?
🤣🤣🤣

Last i checked HE stopped doing their tunnels? I'd rather just natively do IPv6 though... @cbrpilot ;)

as for graphs, I'll double check that's on the list. As long as it's not performance impacting I'm absolutely game for it.

I thought the problem was Spark has so many IPv4 addresses that IPv6 isn't needed.  It would be nice to do it natively though.

I do tunnels and DNS with HE still.  Maybe they keep the old accounts active.
