I was speaking to someone who works for telecom a while ago, and he said he doesn't tell people who he works for, because he often gets negative comments. So maybe people in the company voted for the name change as it is similar changing to a new company without having to change jobs.

But I would have thought that shareholders should have voted for such a change.

Yep, that basically sums up the silly pointlessness of "rebranding". :-(

PaulBags: On sparkshould.co.nz peoples suggestions get cut off if they're longer than one line, and it's impossible to downvote telecom answers despite the button being there.

Poorly executed propaganda controlled "suggestions" arn't a good sign.

To be fair, I have not yet seen any 'suggestions' worth more than a line so far. So much bile and hate - so utterly pointless. By next month, people will have their civic sense of indignation inflamed by and riled up about something else and Spark will be old news, just something a company decided to name themselves.

That's hardly a fair reply, not that it's wrong but because the majority of the suggestions being worthless is totally irreverent to the website itself being broken.

The website isn't broken at all. Each comment is simply abbreviated on the front page to a single line but loads in its entirety when you click on it. So, yes, I think my comment is pretty fair. :P

Edit to add: The comments actually show up perfectly for me on the main page via the mobile version of the site. Might be worth checking that out if the web version won't work so well?

I take you are a senior executive of a 20,000 staff corporation, I am sure Spark would love your wealth of experience.

What, so the only people who are allowed an opinion are senior executives of a 20,000 staff corporation?

KiwiNZ:What does the FUG say about insults etc

What does it say about being boring and stifling debate?

It is possible to have a reasoned debate and retain common courtesy and manners.

Oh really? You're concerned for the feelings of the fictional "lazy brainless twit in management" that Buzz Bumble was figuratively referring to?

KiwiNZ: Are you suggesting that no corporation should rebrand ?

If it's pointless and meaningless, which is likely 99% of the time, ... yes.
If it's at tax-payer expensence (like Auckland City Council) ... definitely YES!

"Telecom NZ" is a perfectly good name that tells you what they do. "Spark" is silly and juveniile that makes no sense and achieves nothing useful. Of course, the "Telecom NZ" name probably doesn't sit well with the management dimbulbs and their big greedy ideas for trying to muscle in on telecommunications in various other countries outside of "NZ" (some of which they've already been doing for quite a while).

Another example is Air New Zealand's ugly and pointless new "black" colour scheme.

Actually I like the black color scheme.

Interesting point of view considering Telecom have recently been pulling out of international stuff - like selling AAPT.

I also note that none of the other major telcos in NZ have names that tell you what they do either, so presumably you have equal hatred for them too?

I thought so no reasoned debate.

Stop being insulting about Telecom/Spark management some may well be members here.

Wasn't really a question of "like" or "dislike" ... more the pointlessness and expense involved.

NonprayingMantis: Interesting point of view considering Telecom have recently been pulling out of international stuff - like selling AAPT.

I have noticed that, butlast time I read they were selling off some international parts so they could move into another.

Wasn't really the point. The point was "Telecom NZ" is a perfectly good and senisble name, while changing it toe "Spark" is silly and pointless.

Nothing to do with Telecom's management in particular (other then obvoiusly being the ones making this decision) ... ALL management are brainless idiots who rarely actually know what they're doing or think through their decisions properly. Of course, this is partly due to the fact they often know nothing about the business they are "managing" and simply move from one company to the next chasing a bigger and bigger pay packet - one week their selling shoes, the next cars, the next computers.
