Hi,

i have suddenly experienced a dramatic drop in speed since Thursday and would appreciate any feedback/suggestions if there are any! I was getting a perfectly acceptable 11Mbps down and 0.90Mbps up speed consistently but have dropped to a crawl as indicated in results below. I have contacted Telecom who are "watching the line" for five days, in the meantime im left frustrated as videos/downloads are practically impossible.
I will also post my modem stats which look as normal as they have been.

DSL Connection

i should add, yes, ive tried all the usual remedies, including second modem, resetting etc.

Thanks for any input given!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I assume your speed test is over Ethernet, not wireless?

And you don't have a limited speed if you blow your cap?

Your connect rates are fine. Sure you haven't been throttled?

And if you email me pl at Telecom.co.nz with your home phone number and I can post the pretty graphs. But your line looks ok. Perhaps you are throttled.

You need a master filter. When the test has finished running I will post it and say you should give coffeebaron a call.

Why does he need a splitter? His connect rates were excellent.

Connect rates can sometimes be excellent but the error rates can be massive at the same time, resulting to a dramatic decrease in actual real world speed. This is normally due to internal wiring. The DSLAM will connect at what it considers stable. I have not seen the line tests but I can almost guarantee that the graphs look a bit like this:

This is somebody who's connection is sitting at 14mbit down, 930kbit up but his error rate was through the roof, he should have been connecting at 21mbit down, 1.2mbit up so really needs a master filter, his speedtests were about the same too.

Hi,
apologies for the quality but hopefully you can see a sequence of speedtests taken from my ipod over the course of 35 mins....max of 10.9mbps then drop to 0.92 in the space of a few mins. (i admit, not sure how reliable ipod speedtests are! but taken off mobile speedtest app)

edit..image didnt appear sorry, but basically speed drop from 10.9 to 0.92 on ipod , desktop still around 1mbps.

We can't see the image - and Wifi-based speedtests aren't reliable enough anyway for any meaningful research.

If you were to analyse all the variables that are needed to deliver a good connection sync rates would probably make up 10% of that.

I just don't think that this sounds like a DSL related issue. Yes it is possible to have errors in the DSL, but do not think that the symptoms match. If the noise floor is suddenly rising on this connection, you'd see a DSL dropout, or at least some bit swaps. This is a throughput issue. The question is which party of the link is responsible. Is it bad Wi-Fi? Or CPE? It's it a bung router? Our is there a confession issue in the ISP network? It doesn't sound like the last one given that ISP issues will only appear at peak times. I would suggest the OP try some different CPE - both pc and router. Beg or borrow from a friend, and test it out.
