Hay guys

I am currently connected to Telecom fibre with my Telecom Pace v5524 gateway modem.

But this modem is keep on restarting so I ended buying an Asus DSL-N66U modem (which supports fibre) today.

So far I have no luck connecting to the internet with the N66U. I am not entirely sure if I enter the correct setting but I followed the Broadband Settings for Non-Telecom Modems from Telecom's website (http://help.telecom.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/1180)

One thing I am not sure is the Transfer Mode (Ethernet WAN/ATM/PTM). I assume it's Ethernet WAN but still no luck.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

You need to setup PPPoE over vlan 10 on your WAN port. That's the main trick, and I am not sure if your device supports vlan 10.

Forgive me if this sounds insulting, but you are plugging it in to the WAN port, right next to the USB ports, and not just a LAN port or the DSL port, right?

Yep.. that does look right.. I didn't look at the screen shots... the mtu should be 1500 though.

Yes it is connected the the WAN port. I basically moved the cables from the old modem to the new modem.

I couldn't set MTU to 1500. I have asked the Telecom staff this morning before purchasing the modem and he said I either set MTU 1500 or 0 (Auto) and that should be fine. Check my old modem configuration, the MTU is set at 1492.

I am just curious is Ethernet WAN the correct transfer mode? There are ATM and PTM also...

ATM = ADSL
PTM = VDSL

So neither of them should be set on your ethernet WAN.

I would probably also set IPv4 only... As we don't support dual stacks (yet!)

I just don't know what is wrong with it at the moment.

Please get the router connected with an MTU of 1492 first, and when successful, you can try with an MTU of 1500.
Some routers do not support the appropriate RFCs to support 1500 byte PPP MTU over an Ethernet link.

Like Peter says, IPv4 only.

If still no joy, can you please advise what is in the PPP authentication box? I imagine it will have both PAP and CHAP, but does it have an option for "None" or similar?
If so, set that.

Everything else in your settings looks fine. Feel free to PM me your line number and I can see what I can see on our end if you're still having issues connecting. May not be able to tell too much - depending on where the issue lies ...

I have given up on this modem and I am returning it for another one.

Anyone has a recommendation on a good fibre modem?

I am currently thinking of getting the NetGear D6300

What's wrong with getting one of the huawei ones.. then if you need gb lan speeds get a 8 or 16 port gb switch? If you chat online and say you are having issues then normally you can get one of the new ones. Which are pretty good.

You really should be looking at routers, not modems.

Does that device support VLAN tagging on the WLAN? If it doesn't it's not going to work. Google suggests it doesn't so it's not going to work. The Asus is a far superior device and does work fine with UFB so the issue is clearly something with your config.

I'd go as far as suggesting probably 10% of Ethernet routers on the market support VLAN tagging on the WAN. Your options are very limited unless you use 3rd party hardware such as a Mikrotik or switch to tag the traffic.

Huawei one? You mean the one from Telecome?

Well the trouble is Telecom sent me a replacement for my Pace V5542 Gateway. I thought they would've sent me a Huawei one (the one that is being advertised) but instead they sent me another Pace V5542 Gateway which didn't work straight out of the box (the boardband LED light wouldn't even turn on).

Anyway, I ended up returning the DSL-N66U for a ASUS RT-AC66U. I called Netgear and they said the D6200 doesn't support VLAN tagging. After further research on Geekzone it seems AC66U supports VLAN tagging (if not, then there are third party firmwares that enable such option).

The setup of AC66U is similar to the DSL-N66U (the VLAN/VID is under "LAN" tab instead of the "WAN") but this time it worked perfectly.

After 2 days of googling, trying different options, I have finally got a third party router that works with Telecom Fibre.

I am just disappointed that Telecom sent me a refurbished Pace V5542 Gateway instead of a brand new Huawei modem/router. It would've saved me time and money (AC66U costs $300) to connect to a internet service that I paid monthly for ~.~
