I don't mind the pop-up, but is it necessary to do it on every page view? Can you only do it once (or up to 5 page views) a day or something like that?
- James
The number of advertisements on GZ is a bit OTT I'm not going to lie, it's quite invasive now so I can see why people use adblockers.

And yet I am removing things. Last week alone I removed two ad scripts from the forums (the Google AdSense below the topic and the last reply), plus removed the Amazon script that redirect affiliate mentions from all pages that do not mention Amazon (this page will have it because Amazon is mentioned now), plus three other scripts that we used to track metrics (Pagefair, Wootric and NewRelic).
In all in the last week alone I removed six scripts from the pages, but people don't see the things we do to try and speed up as much as possible.
Also, OTT? Have you visited Stuff, Netguide, NBR lately? Computerworld - where every single page there's a popup overlay?
*sigh*

Was using GZ yesterday and got that green box thing every time I clicked on a link, including I think, moving to the next page of a topic. Really really annoying. However it finally persuaded me to become a subscriber, which is good for someone as cheap as me (am definitely not suggesting that there was some plan to annoy people into subscribing, would never suggest that, I know it's not the kind of thing you'd do).
Anyhoo, although I haven't tested it today to see if that green box still appears when browsing around without being logged in, I think once, if that, should be the limit it appears per session.

I have asked the folks behind the service to clarify if the % number is for visitors or number of times the message is presented. Either this is being fine tuned.
As I mentioned above it's a win-win. I am actively reducing the number of scripts in our pages making then lighter, in hope that in exchange people whitelist Geekzone since we can provide ads with less load.
As I said, this is something I have been doing for years. We run a tight ship here and web performance has always been a focus for me.

So even with geekzone whitelisted I can't use quick reply.
I have fixed the code for this now.

Thank you for subscribing. You may have noticed I don't mention subscription on that message - and that's intentional.
You will also notice that while logged in as a subscriber the page served to you have no ad scripts at all. This means the whole page will load a lot faster, even when compared with the adblocking experience.
I personally use Geekzone with ads, mainly because I want to see what ads are running so that I can cut anything I don't like, but also to keep an eye on page load times.

Yrs, now that you mention it, it does seem quicker.
Also don't have anything against using ads as such, just hate the flashing psychedelic ones or the ones with videos in, just wish they could be stationary and subtle - though obviously ads that are subtle won't appeal to the folks who have to pay for them....

Haven't seen either of the please whitelist messages this afternoon, so thanks ![]()
Friends don't let friends run ABP.
Get uBlock origin. :D
Today I've started getting the pop up notifications about running an ad-blocker too.
I do block ads (uBlock origin), but I'm also subscriber and actually have Webpass turned on too. Just wondering why the pop up has started showing - nothing has changed in my adblock settings.
If you are a subscriber we don't test for adblockers. Or shouldn't. Checking the code.
