i only use that res at home

i use 1024x768 at work, and only have one window up at a time so i dont get distracted...

I'd probably use a higher res on my desktop/server except the refresh rate of 60hz is a bit low for me... I prefer 85hz or higher :)

On my laptop 1024x768 is standard though.

I use 1024 x 768 on my desktop and always full screen for the application I am using - the page was not scrolling though, but I've edited the post anyway.

On my Tablet PC I use 1400 x 1050. It's really nice to work on...

Back to the original topic, did anyone notice that the front page now is generated in half of the time? I removed the buttons to other sites, the Microsoft MVP badge and the Hitwise Top 10 image. This reduced the database load by eliminating the need to randomly select a button to show and update the counters.

I am working on reducing the database times, but should really rework the site to use no tables at all - this should help rendering on the client.

I will continue working on the site, although for the next few weeks I will be doing changes in our other project (or my wife will not be happy).

As an experiment I am temporarily removing the skyscraper ads on the sides of the pages - actually inserted an empty ad with higher priority.

Let's see if you can notice any difference...

the ads arent that bad, i use an adblock plugin heavily in firefox and enjoy it.. especially on news sites etc where stories have ads interlaced.

when i browse geekzone from uni (not on my laptop) the ads arent that bad..

Thanks for the feedback... But taniwha and mike don't like them. So I will experiment with alternative placements (or no placement at all).

Just for kicks, I tried loading up the site using my P910... for some reason there are no ads. Period.
I'm not blocking on that (Opera on P910 is fairly limited) nor using hosts to block ad sites either.

Wonder if the technique used (Iframes etc.) is actually supported on it.
