magu: Hey, where's my IPv6 badge? :P

I toyed with the idea of "badges"... Which is not much different from the stars - but the IPv6 badge is not a bad idea.

Can anyone from an IPv6 connection try and ping this IP?

2002:7962:8b43:0:21c:c0ff:fe6f:f55d

Just a test.

Cool. That means that all my devices on the internal network are visible on the net.

I can see this is going to be huge.

Downloaded the Gogo client and am running it on my win7 machine... very easy to set up. Pity there is no native mac client (they have source code only).

My router (AirPort Extreme) is set to Tunnel for IPv6 Mode. All my internal network is already running IPv6 addresses. Orcon was the only bit missing from it. Still seems a bit flaky, though. Been getting more disconnects than before.

Would love to hear what Orcon has to say about this IPv6 switch.

Orcon has ipv6 in its core, but currently we haven't deployed it to our access network. Mainly due to the fact there are no consumer CPEs which support ipv6 using PPPoA.

(I know Ciscos can do it, but they are not really consumer).

And how come Magu is reachable and has IPv6 addresses?

Or magu, are you using a tunnel?

2002::/16 is a 6to4 tunnel. I haven't tried it with my own airport but it's possible they've got built-in 6to4.

That explains it, then. I've set my router in Tunnel mode.

All IPv6 addresses are public, so if you have native IPv6 then the systems will be available over the internet (assuming the firewall allows it) - For example, my workstation at work has a native IPv6 address, is pingable over the Internet and if you so desire you can browse it's webserver. That's one of the great things about IPv6 :)

Yes, I know that. My question was that if Orcon is not yet offering IPv6 on their packages, then how did magu get his? The answer is already up in a previous reply - his router is using 6to4.

Have a read of Geoff Huston's Column it's explains all the different options, here are his first few paragraphs about 6to4:

6to4

    The 6to4 approach is described in RFC3056, RFC 3068 and RFC3964. 6to4 is a framework of automated point-to-multipoint tunnels that addresses the same general scenario as the manually configured tunnel environment, namely a collection of "islands" of IPv6 that are interconnected by the public IPv4 network.

    The change with the 6to4 approach is that each site is no longer configured with a single tunnel to some tunnel hub, but is in effect configured with the local end of a point-to-multipoint tunnel, so that each 6to4 site is capable of sending and receiving packets from the entire set of 6to4 end sites using the same local tunnel endpoint. In effect all 6to4 sites form a fully meshed overlay network with automatically managed 6to4 tunnels to every other 6to4 site. Obviously each site does not attempt to create these tunnels, but instead the approach is based on encoding an IPv4 address into an IPv6 site address prefix. The local site's IPv4 tunnel endpoint address is used to create an IPv6 /48 end site address prefix, so that 6to4 provides both a tunnelling mechanism and a local end site IPv6 address prefix.

    The 6to4 mapping is performed by using a 6to4 16 bit address prefix, 2002::/16, then appending a 32 bit IPv4 address to the prefix to form a 6to4 site address. For example the IPv4 address 192.0.2.1 is mapped by 6to4 into the IPv6 address prefix of 2002:c000:201::/48.

Stolen from: http://www.potaroo.net/ispcol/2008-02/tui.html

I can't remember the subnet in question, but if it's in the Orcon IPv4 routing table, you will get 6to4 access.

Nathan Ward has supplied a box that does 6to4 and Teredo to various ISPs:

Hmm, guess I'll have to learn a bit more on how to read IPv6 addresses.

Hey hey, it actually works quite fast! Granted, I'm posting from a webserver on a 100Mbit uncontended pipe, but that's besides the point!

<!-- Page created in 70 ms @ 2010-7-13 23:45:20 just for you at 2607:f0d0:1001:15::2 --><!-- This is an IPv6 address -->

I've got another 16 quadrillion IP addresses to go with that one too!
