Vodafone completes nationwide $14 million 4G upgrade programme - launches new network guarantee for customers

More Vodafone customers across New Zealand are benefiting from greater 4G connectivity, following the completion of 121 cell site upgrades and 22 new cell site builds since January this year.

Vodafone’s $14 million investment delivers on its promise to extend the benefits of 4G to more of New Zealand by bringing superfast network speeds to Kiwis living in New Zealand’s provincial areas – in some cases for the first time. The programme has seen 4G coverage across the country increase to over 85% from approximately 74% in February this year.

So confident in its mobile network - and in the investments it has made - that from Monday, Vodafone will provide a money-back mobile network guarantee. If any new customer on a monthly plan is not completely happy within the first 30 days, they can cancel their plan and get their money back.

Tony Baird, Vodafone’s Technology Director, says “we’re putting our money where our mouth is. Kiwis love to stay connected and it’s always been our priority to provide our customers with the network they can rely on to do that. We’re giving new customers the opportunity to experience New Zealand’s leading mobile network – with no obligation.”

Tony adds: “we’ve been relentless with our upgrade schedule this year. These 4G upgrades ensure rural New Zealanders experience the same speed and benefits as those living and working in more urban areas. As evidence of this, 80 of the cell site upgrades offer Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) Services and 15 new cell-sites are built under the RBI Initiative - helping bring faster internet speeds to more and more rural New Zealanders every day.”

Speeds on Vodafone’s 4G network are up to 10 times faster than 3G, allowing customers to stream, download, upload, browse and game faster than ever before. The company’s 4G network carries around 350 terabytes of data each month; a 100% year-on-year increase.

Data streaming now makes up more than 35% of traffic on the mobile network and areas like Southland, West Coast, Canterbury, Tasman and Northland have fully embraced the speed of 4G. For example, during the past year, data use in Southland has increased by more than 170% since the arrival of 4G.

Key statistics:

  • Vodafone’s 4G network is now available to approximately 3.56 million people (over 85% of the total population, increasing from approximately 74% in February 2015) across New Zealand
  • It covers 36,680 square kilometres of the country
  • Vodafone’s 4G network now carries more than 350 terabytes of data traffic per month; an increase of 100% year-on-year
  • More than 1 million devices on Vodafone’s network are now accessing 4G
  • To implement the sites, Vodafone deployed 18 field teams to 63 cities & towns across the country from KeriKeri in the North, to Riverton in the South.
  • More than 60 employees clocked up over 21,000 crew hours to complete the upgrade work at the sites – installing 13,600m of additional cable to upgrade the sites

So is that it?  None of the remaining sites will be upgraded to 4G?

I hope not.

Press release says it's complete. If new sites are being added, what is the point of this press release?

"UPGRADE" is complete. Not roll out.

Press release says an upgrade project is complete, not a full roll out.

Come on folks...

The money-back network guarantee is not enough reason to have a press release? :P

Sorry. I have to say that is a badly worded press release.

The fact that the words "complete" and "4g" are in the first sentence implies that 4g is done.

I know that more 4g will be rolled out forever until 5g starts being rolled out and so on and so on however if Joe Bloggs reads that they assume there will be no more 4g.

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

It's a Press Release people.... unashamedly promoting themselves...
Were you expecting something different perhaps?

And all credit to the Red team for walking the walk and not just talking the talk.

They're challenging us all to prove, or not, to ourselves that they can deliver what they say they can. And does it really matter how they say that when they're offering a get out of jail free card as well?

Surely the time to moan about the semantics is when you've tried the offer and, dissatisfied, you can't break the deal.

No one advised 4G now mirrors 3G coverage

No, you're right. I just would have expected the cities to get it before the other parts of the country. Seriously, not too bummed about it, I'm hardly ever home. 😄

I think you forgot Chch in your upgrade. Still no 4g or even 3g in many parts of city or CBD (eg Sydenham).
No decent coverage in Rolleston either.

Does not advise 100% coverage either many things can impact mobile coverage out of a carriers control
