Waiting to hear back from my account mgr.

But does anyone have a data plan that is shared between their mobile and their data card?

I'm tight and don't want to have to pay for a plan for each sim.

The way Vodafone is set up, it can't be done. There are a lot of people that would kill to have pooled minutes, texts, and data between their group. There are plans to make some business plans pooled minutes but none in the works to pool data.

The pooled allocation for a group is a slightly different concept.

The ability for a data allowance to be shared between a handset and a data only sim (intended to both be used by the same person) would be great!

It would be a useful option agreed, Maybe just use the phone as a data modem? get the data plan put on your phone plan instead of the seperate datacard? most can be charged off the USB as well and with UMTS and GPRS incoming calls will still came through..

That is what I was doing. My nokia usb charger is so slow its not funny, so I carry 2 spare batteries.

My nokia is only UMTS and my data card is HSDPA so there is a speed difference on average of about 500kb.

When you receive a call and the phone drops from 3G back to 2G (as usually happens) you will lose the data connection though.

I have also found that with my push email connection running on my phone the modem connection doesn't get HSDPA, only UMTS.

What do you mean that it usually drops back to 2g? even when I have it set to dual mode (with all the problems it has) I rarely see it change to 2g during a call. You know when it does because it drops for ages, but its not a usual occurance at all IME to have it shift to 2g because of a call.

I would love the shared data and mins so I can put a 3g card on the PC at home for a backup to the adsl, and when I get a working carputer on that too. If I could get 1 gig per month between 3 devices, with the option for multiple extra gigs at $10 a piece then I would be happy as a pig in mud..

In numerous locations in South Auckland (but not everywhere, it must be site specific), usually within 5s - 10s of the call connecting (inbound or outbound), the handset (I've noticed the same on numerous different models) drops back to 2G. I believe is a network feature to conserve 3G bandwidth, the signal strength can be full strength on either mode and it still happens.

It'd be fine if the network was smart enough to only do it when there wasn't an active data connection, but having the "Packet data connection ended" or whatever it is beep in your ear mid call is annyoing as is the loss of the data connection (which of course resumes via GPRS as soon as the call is terminated). Within 5s - 10s of call termination the handset then steps back up to 3G.

EDIT: Oh and yes, being able to ditch the 200MB plan and share the 1GB (+1GB where required) plan between my 2 devices would be great!

Yeah I have a vodaphone for work and just got a new laptop that has built-in 3g, it came with a vodaphone sim already in it; first thing I thought of was adding a data plan to my phone and "linking" the SIM in laptop it. then I can get data at my phone and my laptop from the same data plan. Too good to be true; I guesss.
