I have an iPhone on an iPhone plan. I don't like the iPhone, but I like the plan.

If I sell the iPhone, can I use my iPhone plan with another phone (Nokia N73) including the data?

Yes you can -

you can use the sim card in a vodem or vmc to use the data or any other handset that allow's you to browse online

No, you can't. We're running regular reports to make sure iPhone plans are strictly used by iPhone users. I'm not clear on the details of 'losing' your handset and then requesting to fulfil your contract with another handset but the terms are clear: iPhone plan, iPhone handset. This isn't to say that with some negotiation a manager may request an exception; however we strongly disallow Joe Bloggs from signing onto an iPhone plan without purchasing an iPhone.

Lets get this clear. iPhone purchased, but sim card used in another phone.

What is VF going to do about it? It doesnt say anything on the contract I signed I cant use my SIM/Plan in another phone. Nor does it say anything in the On Account T&C's

Haha, I just found the memo. It appears they penalise the sales channel instead - heavily. Changing sims for you guys should be transparent but the dealer may have a fight on their hands.

Clause 7. a) of the terms and conditions you signed states that it is up to you to determine any special terms pertaining to a new plan you may wish to change to. You may call customer service or view the relevant section of our website and both will either tell you or show you that the iPhone plan may only be used in conjunction with an iPhone.

Be warned, they can cut you off but it doesn't look like they will. Instead the dealer seems to take the heat

For starters, why would they want to cut me off? Cutting of paying customers isn't good for revenue.

Secondly, why would they penalise the dealer? What has it got to do with them what I want to do with my phone after they have sold it to me.

24 months seems to be the norm with Vodafone these days, but do they expect that all iPhone customers will keep their iPhones for 2 years?

Sure a good proportion will, but it is inevitable that some of those people will change handsets during their contract term.

The vodafone site simply says that the iPhone plans are available with the 3G iPhones. I interpret that as I can't sign on to an iPhone plan without buying the iPhone as well. Nothing is said about changing handsets after purchase.

In black and white, on the iPhone plans page of the Vodafone NZ website "The iPhone 3G plans are only available on iPhone 3G handsets."

I don't see how you could interpert that in any other way.

They're preventing other handset users from changing to the iPhone plan because they see it as more competitive than the average plans we offer. In lamen terms, they think they'll lose money if they allow open access to them. I don't personally feel the plans offer any greater value but I don't make the rules.

Sorry, Joe but your conspiracy theory doesn't hold water...

if you compare plan with plan the iPhone offers about 20% savings over the same minutes/data/whathaveyou on a regular phone.

Apple wants the iPhone plans to be exclusive to the iPhone and we've agreed. The only one that isn't is the $250/month plan which is only available in store but is available on non-iPhone devices.

There is (physically) nothing to stop customers taking their iPhone enabled SIM and putting it in a non-iPhone handset. It'll still work, but I think the APN settings were all through Apple (wandering into unfamiliar territory here... may be off the mark) so they may need to be reset... I may be wrong on that score, however. I know there's something about the SIMs that means some of the add-ons don't work (eg the trouble getting Family set up).

That's basically what we settled on Paul, that the iPhone plans are better value and you CAN take your sim with you to another handset. Read the posts man!
