Telecom have been annoying me lately so im interested in checking out Telstra.

I called Telstra and they need to check the location and see if there will be a charge to run the connection up the drive to the house.

He said being in Christchurch we would be on cable but couldnt advise what speed the connection is???

Im not sure what the Telecom speed is as its just ADSL2 on their 20gb plan.
Im hoping cable would be faster?

Speeds are 15/2 or 25/2 look at the plan details on their site.

Cable isn't like ADSL where the speed varies, if you're on the cable network you get the full speed you pay for - though international links or some websites are sometimes slow.

Sounds like you got a typical example of TC customer service. The technology's great, the service varies between great and awful, but once it's set up and going thankfully you rarely need to talk to them.

For gaming many times Cable pings will be the best there is. Speed is always relevant to what you are connecting too.

Also make sure where you are looking at the house has GREEN BOXES WITH YELLOW NUMBERS and note the number. Some boxes are or at some stages were empty. Not all Chch gets cable.

You will find Cable to be more reliable than DSL. The downside with Telstra Clear is their customer service is lacking, my setup went to plan the last house, but the one before that was a nightmare. Although once setup I have NEVER had to contact them for support issues related to the connection.

Also I should mention bing in a cable area gives you a great opportunity to save some $$ by getting rid of your POTS based phone line. You can get a superior VOIP setup from xnet for $14 with caller ID, call waiting and voicemail coming as standard. I run my VOIP over telstra cable and highly recommend it.

So what speed would my telecom connection be *roughly* say im within a few kms from an exchange

I did a plan upgrade last night and when i spoke to telecom this morning they said their system lost it because it didn't recognise the telephone number.

Funny since i did it whilst logged in to YourTelecom where it has all your details....

If you think of going VoIP, plan ahead... You will have to port your phone number to TelstraClear and get the cable installed. Once all is working, then you have to port your number to VFX, while keeping the cable service.

You will have to look at plans and make sure you don't sign up on a term contract (not sure there's a term contract with TCL). Basically you want to make sure you will be able to move the phone number to VFX without being locked on TCL for phone services because of a contract.

Also remember going VoIP means you will need an ATA device.

However I feel we might be talking about something you didn't even think about before.

I have no idea. Go to speedtest.net and find out.

TC cable is fast, and generally very reliable reliable, but it stops working in a power cut. I'm told there are pole mounted repeaters, and they can't put battery backup into them. That's rarely a problem though, cable internet rarely goes down.

Yes no plans for voip at this stage. one day perhaps.

Just looking for a faster and more reliable broadband service with phone.

Be easier to get Cable, then port direct from Telecom to VFX.

That's exactly what I did, I kept my phone line with Telecom and just signed up for Broadband and TV with TCL and then ported my number over to 2talk. Less hassle than switching it TCL first and no chance of them screwing it up.

One thing to keep in mind though is you'll lose all phone access if the power goes out (which has happened to us after the big earthquake/aftershocks, after Feb we were without power for 6 days), so have a backup. If 2talk can't connect to my Asterisk box it's set to forward to my mobile phone which I make sure is always charged. It's not a foolproof solution (congested networks stopping calls getting through etc) but it's good enough for me.

Oh that's interesting. Telstra HFC in Australia is battery backed up. I assumed the pole mounted repeaters were passive, but I clearly I thought wrong.

To the OP though... it's impossible to say what speed your DSL will run at. Generally if you're within 2km to the cabinet/exchange you'll get at least 10mbit - but there's just too many factors to take into account. The only way to reliably know what speed you will get is to take the plunge.

go with tc cable. this is what i miss most when i decided to leave wellington 2years ago! (45ms ping to Perth when i host online game)
