Rang up yesterday to upgrade form Vodafone adsl to vdsl, everything was all go, modem on way and waiting for call from chorus. Then got phone call from Vodafone today out of the blue saying I can't get vdsl because it's not installed at my cabinet. Chorus map shows I can get it so dose telecom website so rang back after work and got told different story that I'm to far away and that it only works up to 2km away (I haven't measured but I would say I'm more like 500m away - if the green box down the road is the cabinet) and he told me that I would just get the same speed as adsl, I asked if I would get faster upload speed because that would be good and he said no it will be slower (is this true?) also rang telecom and they said I can get it (but I'm on contract with vf for 4 more months), so not sure what to do i really want faster internet. From doing research the attenuation needs to be below 10.8, this is what I got from my modem

Attenuation(dB) 24.5 10.7
Power(dBm) 12.8 0.0

My misses was streaming at the same time don't no if this effects stats.

Just wondering if anyone knows if I have a chance of getting vdsl or have to wait the indefinite amount of time for fiber? Thanks for any help!

That looks similar to my stats and I got vdsl today. I am 650 m away from the cabinet. The Vodafone folks following this thread will have the correct info about your cabinet.

Tim or demeter should be help you out tomorrow.

your attenuation is boarderline, but you should still pass for vdsl.

your downstream rate is rather low, which would indicate line issues - a splitter installation which is part of a vdsl installation will likely resolve theses.

given your downstream rate, there is a chance your attenuation is a little high too.

2KM, it is more like less than 1KM.

ask your isp (or any for that matter) for a prequalification, and take note of your attenuation figure.

your stats are from the modem, so no they arent affected.

Couple of questions if anyone could help? Very keen on getting in on the VDSL action having moved from Wellington (very fast) Telstra Cable network to Palmerston North (horriblly slow and painfully intermittent) ADSL network. ( On a side note: Moving from VF cable to ADSL was exceedingly painful. 2 different 'companies' allegedly claiming to be the same people does not work!)

- Does the router supplied by VF work with an Apple Basestation? ie can it work in a bridge (modem only) mode. I use my Apple Extreme to run my network hard drive.
- If it doesn't i would be keen to buy my own VDSL router (eg Draytek 130). What would the cost of an install be then (given i'm a current ADSL customer)?
- We're leaving NZ for 6 months travelling in about 10 months time. What does this mean in terms of cost liability for having to sign up to another 12 month contract?

Have you checked you are in VDSL coverage?

Not sure about the contract question if you agree to a 12 month term then decide to go away that does not change the contract term

Hi, this is a question for any of the Vodafone people following this thread. We went onto VDSL yesterday and all is good. Sync speeds are good:

Upstream line rate (kbit/s):10354
Downstream line rate (kbit/s):32050
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s):14728
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s):34400
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB):19.9
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB):12.3

but download speeds in speedtest are rubbish. Yesterday I got up to 16 Mbps at times but by last night it topped out at 1 Mbps. This morning is slightly better but not much.... Upload speed is great....

Any ideas?

A variety of speedtests both wired and wifi. Makes no difference. Closest server as randomly determined by speedtest.net. Mostly to Vodafone.

Upload is constistant at 9 Mbps up. Download varies between 1 Mbps and 5 Mbps.

I take it you checked to make sure nothing else was using download bandwidth at the time? Although with that kind of drop it would have to be a pretty serious download.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.
