@sansom - Thanks for the responses.

That answers all my questions for now.

The single and only concern I have is the Disney+ support, the other things are ok for now.
As I wouldn't want to get entrenched in using VTV, and later find out no Display+, so need a second device. Especially getting wife/kids approval for "ease of use".

I have seen previous posts about possible chromecast support, e.g. casting from an android/iphone device to the VTV.
Is this feature being worked on? If so, could we use the Disney+ mobile app to 'cast' to the VTV, even if the VTV does not have its own disney+ app?

Just thinking of other options.

For some reason 3 news can't be recorded or rewatched

Can 3 news be watched via the three ondemand app via VTV?

e.g. say at 8pm in the evening (once kids are in bed), turn on VTV, navigate to Three on demand, and then watch today's news? (that was broadcast at 6pm)

We record 3 news daily with no issues.

You can watch 3 news on demand using the app - they have the last two days of the 6pm news up there - not sure how long after the live show it takes for them to have it available though.

It possibly does, but I don't have an account with them so haven' tried it. Would be far easier from the main EPG rather than then having to go through the app, which isn't much different from just using a chromecast and casting from the app on a phone. Not sure if the quality would be as good going through the 3 app, and whether it gets subtitles.

Does VTV Gen 2 stream YouTube, and Netflix in 4K?

Thanks.

Is there anyone who uses this VTV on an adsl connection?  I know they state you need fibre or vdsl, but we currently stream Netflix and on-demand without a problem, so am I right in assuming that it will also work through the VTV?

Parents use it on a 20mbit rural Uber wireless connection. Streams fine, no buffering. So provided you’ve got unlimited data on adsl, it should be fine.

Yes, unlimited data is essential.  The other thing to be mindful of is that many ADSL modem routers don't support 5GHz Wi-Fi and so you'd have to use ethernet.  VTV uses 5Ghz Wi-Fi and doesn't support using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

@snowfly:

Plus has anyone found a particular show they cannot record? (e.g. one of the 10% that vodafone claim cannot be recorded).

First two shows I tried to record were NCIS and Hawaii Five-O. Can't record either.
Can't catchup or record many movies. (But can borrow The Magnificent Seven 2016 from the local library ... phew!)
Can't watch Three on the VTV app either.

Can record or 'catchup' News on Three (Looks like people on this forum don't watch 'Newhub Live at 6pm' live at 6pm!)

BTW, in an earlier post I meant to say that most navigation is much easier on the app than on on the box. The app has a function 'Push to TV' to use once you've used the app for navigation. (I got my terms mixed up first time. :-O )

OK - the VTV box is nice hardware, and the app looks nice. We thought that we would get used to the user interface. After a week, it is still a source of stress. We don't like the interface.

Turns out I got my terms wrong. Apparently navigating back with the app, selecting a programme, and pushing it to TV is different to 'Catch Up', which happens on the device. Using the app we could select NCIS from yesterday's guide, and push it, but it turns out NCIS is not available for catch up on the device. Perhaps that is the same for the news - I didn't try that.

Then we found yesterday's NCIS was stuffed up in some other strange way. There are two episodes - Old NCIS and All New NCIS. We recorded All New on the T-Box (not allowed to 'record' it on VTV :-( ), and tried pushing it from the app as described above (works for other programs). For yesterday's All New NCIS both Vodafone devices showed the same episode, which is a different (much older) one to the description they give. MythTV (terrestrial Freeview) and Three Now both give the same description, but the correct episode. That was a new one on us!

I was thinking today 'providing live TV can't be that hard'. Then I looked back. It must be almost thirty years since Kiwi Cable started sending analouge TV down their coax cable from Lindale. In all those years no other ISP has offered any serious competition. Thirty years later, Vodafone NZ is an enterprising Kiwi-owned company that also owns the legacy of Kiwi Cable, and it still isn't right. I guess it must be 'that hard'. Good luck @JasonParis!

:-)

Catch-up is not on the device - you select from the grid up to three days before and you can watch any program on the grid again.

Are you sure you were not in the recording section (left), instead of looking at the grid (mid-section)?

For that price I'll buy one but none of the retailers have it for less than $149, where can it be bought for $99?

Thanks for the suggestion @freitasm. No, the main menu is a part of the UI I think we have sussed!
Here is a random photo of a screen from yesterday (20 May). I'm guessing the programmes with a play icon are the ones available. NCIS didn't have a play icon. The App has different icons (from memory)

To record Hawaii Five-0 try this: Go to the most recent episode on the EPG grid. Press OK to start playing it. Then press OK again. You should be able to record the series from there.

Just ordered a Gen 2 box for the $99 offer :) for a bedroom, will compliment our existing Gen 1 box in the lounge. (don't want to pay for Sky for the bedroom) but the bedroom TV doesn't have Freeview and Vodafone TV kills 2 birds with 1 stone (Traditional TV and smart apps)

@kiwipawl Gen1 has to be linked to a Vodafone account not like the Gen2
