langers1972:

I'm pretty happy with the service except for the congestion issues in the evening if I could swap to fibre and stay with Vodafone I would.

Fast internet needs to be fast, what else is there that the service has to do.

That's like saying "I'm quite happy with that restaurant, except the food is bad in the evening"

The elephant in the room:

The reason for the "evening dip" is because that is when most people have the time and the inclination to use the Internet.

These people are paying their ISP good money to provide this service, on demand.

It is the responsibility of the ISP to see that their network can meet normal demand - and normal demand is highest at 8 to 9pm at night.

I believe if you want to be on fibre, Vodafone need to pay Chorus to supply the connection, whereas fibre is all their own network, so that cost does not exist. Does seem odd though - either you pay them 100% of the cost or they don't want you at all?

Sorry - that should read the cable network is their own.

freitasm:

langers1972: It just seems so stupid that you can't stay with vodafone and just move to fibre.

Regardless of this limitation, I was set on moving on. Have been a Vodafone customer (and TelstraClear, and TelstraSaturn, and Saturn, and Chello) for the best part of 17 - 18 years. Seeing how things were going I thought a good time to move.

Me too. Cable was a great product back in the day but just look at the fact that multiple long term customers are jumping.

+1  Customers are not just jumping because cable is better/faster/newer than HFC cable - it's also because cable performance has deteriorated since "unlimited" plans were introduced.

Any updates? I'm curious if the Chorus/Downer vans out front were doing some preliminary work for a cutover or something. I propped up a Minecraft server a couple of days ago, but a friend messaged me today saying that it's down this morning. Unfortunately, I won't be home until after 5 pm, so I can't really do anything now...

We did also have some relatively minor issues with congestion last night. We only dropped to ~90 Mbps, though, and latency was fortunately solid all throughout. It was definitely better than most nights, but there were still surefire signs of unresolved problems.

It's been quiet today, and tonight has been horrid!

It seems like we're hearing every single week that it's going to be fixed "this week" or "the week after", but without fail there are always delays!

I feel left in the dark now...

An average bad night on 100/10 cable.

Any word on the delayed updates?  smile

We're on the same node Sideface, seems odd your connection is looking so bad when mine is fine.

As stated, 44Mbps is average bad for the time of night.

Here are my TrueNet hourly stats, averaged over the last week:

They've been very busy testing internally, I expect some more work will be scheduled soon. Of course will be sure to pass on updates when I have news.

I have several friends getting hooked up with 200/200 Mbps fibre now. Some of them got it set up today. They're getting 210 Mbps.

Meanwhile, it's not even 6 pm and we're not even getting 70% of advertised speed here. :(

Talked to my flatmates today as well, and they were having the same issues with YouTube and whatnot last night.

Hopefully VodafoneDylan has some great news for us soon, but we've now literally been having problems for over a year. There's still no end in sight. It's absolutely bloody ridiculous.

I'm in the process of looking at different flats just so that I can have access to a more reliably performing connection, since fibre's not scheduled to be rolled out in this location for another 3+ years. We'll see if I actually find anything, though, since I'm otherwise quite happy here and my standards are rather high.

EDIT

The connection is fluctuating all over the place. Tested ten minutes later and it's mostly fine. Seeing near-advertised speeds now.

I dread to think of how 9 pm will be this evening...
