Hi Hamish, appreciate the good feedback you are giving the community here, good stuff.

Now just confirming with the packages, because its not clear on your web site, you dont need to purchase the starter and then add say sports, you can just our right only subscribe to sports or entertainment etc. without the starter

Mobile devices are coming to VTV and via the VTV companion app will be offering:

1 Live viewing of the Sky channels

2 Initiating recordings on all content while out and about

3 Viewing cloud recordings and 3 day rewind of Sky content

4 Browsing and searching all content from the EPG, 3 day rewind and recordings, and then pushing/casting the content found onto the STB

You'll note I mention Sky for functions 1&3 as the free-to-airs won't be making their content available for viewing on the Vodafone TV mobile app.  This is because they have invested in their own mobile apps that allow viewing of their content both live and via catch up (and ensures advertising isn't skipped!).  The main use of the VTV mobile app with free-to-air content is for browsing the epg, pushing the content to the STB, and remotely setting up recordings.

When it's ready to go you will see a "Mobiles and Tablets" app on the STB app rail.  This app will display a QR code that you then scan from the VTV mobile app in order to link your mobile to the STB.  I'll let you know as soon as we do this ... [  unless someone else on GZ beats me to it like with the release of VTV on our online store :-)  ]

Hi Cyril, yes we need to add more information on the Sky pricing on our web site.

In terms of your specific question, you do need Sky's Starter plan if you want any of their other content, this is Sky's pricing.  With VTV standalone we've chosen to price Sky's content and packages in the same way Sky do.

However, what's different with VTV is that you don't need a contract, don't need to be credit checked, don't need a dish or antenna install, you can add and remove Sky content on a month-by-month basis.  We also include 500 hours of cloud PVR and 3 day rewind (~1.5TB) at no extra cost (compared to $15/mth for MySky).

Hi Hamish

Can you purchase Sky Sport Now https://www.skysportnow.co.nz/ via Vodafone TV

If not would you be looking into offering this in the future?

Thanks

Just watching rugby world cup opening ceremony on TV1, im comparing it with a satellite feed thats also up elsewhere..direct from japan. Showing the same video footage TVone with all the hops and buck passing terrestrial tv1 to sky to vodafone pingpong hop skip and jumping etc the delay in footage is approx 1.30 MINUTES.

YIKES~!

Can Vodafone fill us in on some of  their additional time delays, with say the terrestrial channels in normal conditions.

Not specifically for sport, but the timing delay of something appearing on terrestial freeview and it appearing on the Vodafone stb.

I've managed to get Olof Olsson (@Olof) to make his first GZ post in 10 years to help explain...

I was having a look through the portal last night and can confirm it says under each option the requirements needed to subscribe to those certain channels

Good to be back on GZ @sansom! Better stay active from now on! :-)

The Vodafone TV "delay" is approximately 30-35s under normal circumstances, however, it can vary depending on client (STB and mobile) conditions. This is not isolated to Vodafone TV of course, and is present in pretty much all streaming services that depend on adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming, such as HLS or HSS. Caused by the fact that ABR chunks the video into segments that are typically somewhere between 2 and 10 seconds long. (Vodafone TV uses 2s segments for STB.) These segments then needs to be generated on the origin or CDN side, and buffered on the client side, allowing the client to move up and down the ABR bitrate levels if the network conditions changes. (Without causing video playback to stall.)

Good news is that there are new techniques and standards emerging that lowers this lag significantly. We are working with Vodafone Group to deploy these enhancements in the future.

If you have more then one VTV in the same house, do both devices need their own sky subscription?

Does the unit support HDMI-CEC? The volume button on it shows a volume indicator on the TV but no change in sound volume on the TV or my soundbar

ttaotua: If you have more then one VTV in the same house, do both devices need their own sky subscription?

Vodafone TV works on the concept of "household" (=account) and all subscriptions, like SKY, are against the household. This means that:

  • If you have more than one VTV set-top box, they all share the same SKY subscriptions.
  • If you record something, it is available on all your devices (set-top boxes and mobile). Big benefit of cloud PVR.
  • If you start watching something on one device, you can continue on another device and it knows your last watching position

Noting that we have not yet officially launched support for multi-room (multiple set-top boxes). Coming very soon!

HDMI-CEC support is coming in the next major release of the software for the set-top box.
