Mahuhu: 3G launch - the city will be in "red"

There's another big event coming up soon where one team is in red - perhaps too big a campaign from Vodafone would've raised the public consciouslness around 'red'?

So I am thinking that the reason that there isn't a huge campaign on Day 1 is that there really isn't that much for the average (or even above average) punter to get excited about. Here are some possibly controversial facts

1. MobileTV has similar content to Telecom's service, and you have to be in 3G coverage to use it (unlike the competition where you can use it anywhere in NZ). Basically its playing catchup

2. The music download service is just crazy - you download a song and can't play it on any other device at all. It's like buying a CD and nominating the stereo you can play it on. Why didn't they at least look at an industry standard DRM like WMA so at least you could play the song on your PC or a WMA compatible player. And the songs are priced about twice that of coketunes which at least allows multi-device playing.

3. Video calling - having been in the largest 3G gathering in the world this year in Cannes (30,000 people) and not seeing one spontaneous video call you have to think to your self that this will take years to take off. I'm not saying that this isn't a powerful way of communicating (it is very powerful) but there are a large number of barriers to uptake which are pretty much based on simple network effects i.e. the power of the network is proportional to the square of those on the network, and for video calling the barriers are breadth of coverage (you have to think if you are in coverage and if your caller is in coverage), and entry price points for handsets (not everyone can afford $700 + for a handset), not to mention that video calls require a completely different way of communicating. At least mobile phones extended normal telephone behaviour so it was a logical extension of an existing communication style

I'm not trying to get down on the launch but you can't help but feel that Telecom have stolen the key 3G pitch of video entertainment services by being first to market with a similar package of content and better coverage. Music and video calling might get there but they have a way to go to be compelling (as opposed to interesting)

BTW I do think the data pricing is a great step in the right direction...

Vodafone had mobile TV before TCNZ just not in New Zealand and DRM protects the folks that make the music and everyone gets a cuts of the $ and the coverage is in main centres is great but hey you can't please all the tribe.

Mobile TV? Sorry, but in both cases it looks to me like video clips only.

I believe mobile TV only when live broadcast is available, and this is only when Satellite DMB is available (like this).

Video calls to OZ work well even though its not on the list it was to the 3 network

Agree - it's video clips (Mobile TV is good marketing though)

IMHO its not really that useful to us if any company has a product overseas before the competitor has here (to your point johnr that VF launched videoclips overseas pre Telecom - customers couldn't give a monkey's)

And as for DRM - I am all for it - I am just confused why VF didn't use DRM that allowed you to do the Management bit for the download songs. from what I can see they have chosen proprietary DRM that doesn't let you manage the rights for the content you have bought on another platform (eg PC or other media player)
In the end it should be all about giving the customer what they want and I think VF have erred too much on the side of their own proprietary handset technology stack instead of giving customers a great experience for music. Customers don't care about 3G - they care about buying music for a fair price and being able to use it in a fair manner. Over $3 for a music track that you can't play on any other media player for your own use isn't fair.

All I can say is that when someone launches a music service that allows you to download and use music that is protected on PC, MP3 player and mobile phone .. that company will win the hearts of music lovers.

Hi,
I have a z800 and are unable to get the Voda Live 3G offerings; TV, Music streaming etc...
Video calling works fine and is great, anyone with any idea when they may increase the range of 3G handsets they allow to access their Live offerings??

Z800 is not an approved Vlive handset the V800 is Z800 will never get access

Why not though?
it is the same handset just with improved software...4 x digital zoom, ability to use MP3s as ringtones etc...
is it not like it is going to harm the network...would they not prefer to have as many 3G handsets as possible able to use the new services?

I have already answered the question the Z800 is not a approved Vlive handset the V800 is they use different firmware. I have a V800 which is flashed to Z800 and I knew I would not have access. Wish I did now!

Next time I can give you a test phone, you should have called me instead.. :)

Actually I got a phone call, promising a "press pack" that never materialised...

Got a phone call today. I think there are eyes and ears everywhere.

mmm...might try downspecing my Z800 by getting it flashed to V800 firmware and see if it then works with local streaming content from Voda Live.

Got a 6680 at home with me now, its on the fringe of the 3g coverage in karori so I keep dropping back, albeit this post is via 3G
