Agreed. Generally it is fine to disagree with your employer, we all will do it at some point, but in a public forum, or when talking to customers and the public, it is best, especially if you identify yourself as an employee of the company in question, to either say nothing, or stick to the official line. Unless you are so entirely discontent with your employer and wish to get your marching orders that is?

Let's not forget that Telecom already locks its handsets and has done for many years.

That is not correct. Telecom will NOT be locking their new phones for their new network, as per this acticle.

Agreed. Would be a shame for Vodafone though, the poster showed more knowledge than nearly anyone else who works for Vodafone that I've ever spoken too....

EDIT: Just to be crystal - that last comment doesn't extend to anyone from Vodafone who posts here - just your average store worker/customer services call centre person...

We're not talking about their new GSM handsets but the fact they're been locking their existing GSM handsets since they launched them around 2 years ago. They have been very protective of their SIM locking, as proven by their actions when the unlock codes for the W531 made it into the public domain.

Their world mode phones, which they only have very limited models anyway, perhaps were locked, I don't know, but that is how they possibily sourced them from their provider. Perhaps they also didn't want their customers using them on different networks around the world, otherwise they would miss out on their roaming fees.
Anyway we are taking about the future, not the past, and telecom have now commited to not locking their new phones, so perhaps that is a backdown on their previous policies, and is due to increased competition. This is great for the consumer. Hopefully the commerce commission acts on the compliants they have received about vf, as locking phones to a particular network, in a small market like NZ , which already has some of the highest mobile calling prices, will stifle competition.

Didn't you know that politican type people don't actually answer questions, they just communicate spin.
Yes they are interesting points. What I really want to know is why our mobile costs are still so high, and some plans haven't reduced in price for 10 years.

Why does it cost me $1.39 per minute to phone a telecom mobile from a vodafone phone, on a regular prepaid phone.

If he / she works in sales they most likley know little about tech terminology..

I work for a Sales office and can say that EVERYONE in the office knows all the terminology. How are you meant to sell it if you don't? Would you trust a car salesman who tried to get into the car via the boot.

I'd be interested to see if Telecom say they will never lock their handsets or whether it will be "not at the moment" type thing. Reading the Herald blog would be hard to lock a device that will only work in the 3 main centres in November. And on that, what are the 3 main centres. Obviously Auckland and I assume Wellington. Whats the third? Hamilton, ChCh ??

Slightly off topic, but do wonder what 'Joe Public' would like more. Telecom not locking handsets but, due to its purchasing power (or lack thereof) selling unlocked handsets for a higher price ... against the size of Vodafones purchasing arm worldwide meaning a discounted , but locked, handset? Perhaps it will come down to an "On Account" battle where its a fight to get as many people signed onto terms as possible for both major players ... with NZ Comms picking off lots of prepay customers ??

Not sure myself, just playing Devils Advocate.

Not quite correct. GSM / EDGE will AFAIK be nationwide (97%), it is only WCDMA / HSPA that will be restricted to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

What sales office is this? I'd love to be able to send people your way if that is true. I have yet to find anyone who really knows much of anything in a mobile sales store... Sadly they can still sell plenty, because most people are not as well informed as me about mobile technology.

Vodafone isn't just in Auckland. There are corporate Sales office in Hamilton, Wellington, ChCh and I understand there is even one (probably lonely & cold) gentleman in Dunedin ... so not store people like your Digital Mobile/First Mobile stores who deal with small companies & all the wonderful consumers. We go after the larger companies and Govt departments for instance who, to get on topic, I've yet to hear mention the locking of handsets. I'd imagine at the end of their contract period if they wanted to port 1000 users then its a considerable amount of money if the devices are locked. Good incentive to stay but possibly a bad incentive to sign. So we live in interesting times.
