KiwiNZ: I am getting close to dial speed. Not happy.

Time to get a mobile.  I can pull 2/2 on my mobile.

If we wanted to do that I'm sure we all would, but a pointless comment when we are discussing TelstraClear speeds this weekend and cross-referencing with other peoples experiences during the free data weekend.

As it is I will be using my mobile this evening to have a Skype video call with my family in the UK instead of using the data i pay for with TC. They shouldn't be having a free data weekend if it is going to adversely affect the network so much that we cannot use it!

Very clever in not posting your actual speeds. I'll bet you're not getting close to dialup speed though :-)

freitasm: Also folks, worth noting that this weekend is not what a typical unlimited plan would look like anyway - people are obviously taking advantage of something out of norml. Of course it will be a "land rush".

I imagine if this was something permanent that Telstra wanted to do they could resolve it by purchasing a larger amount of international bandwidth (not sure that's the correct term...) across the southern cross cable, correct?  That would then resolve the issue of slow international traffic.

And yeah, people are jumping on this because it's a limited offer...if it was something people had access to all the time then it's quite unlikely that we would be seeing the complaints we do in this thread...

i used to have dial up faster than those downloads.

there's no excuse for TC screwing us like that.

and to whoever it was that is blaming the users for not expecting the network to slow down.... take a long walk off a short pier. especially with the faults response of nothing we can do, tough luck.

if TC are going to do this more often, then i am talking with my feet and finding another ISP.

I just realised I had limited my connection on my end - doh! When I switched that off it went from 2Mb to now sit between 6Mbps and 10Mbps, over my VPN. That's 70+% of what I usually get, with every man and his dog using the international bandwidth. I'm impressed!

The slow speed seems to be specific to your area.

stocksp: Come on TC - time to admit you screwed up and stop this Now!

How have they screwed up? Screwing up would be offering the unmeasured service and having it crash completely which is clearly not the case. Or actually billing for it(!).

What we have here is a community of techno savvy folks (mainly) who are seeing the manifestations of the offer and making comments on it.  And despite what people might want to think, this community is a small subset of the TCL customer base. What I would find intereting if their call centre were flooded with calls complaining about slow performance but no such data has been released here.

And this provides data for TCL on their bandwidth requirements should they ever move to an unlimited model.

Their call centre has been flooded - they have had to put an announcement at the beginning of the 'say your problem' recording

My point was purely that you can use another provider to bridge events like this.

I do agree with you that it is unreasonable and unacceptable to change the whole service profile without also giving an option to opt out, which could have been done, but clearly wasn't.

It seems that most people are getting value as there are really very few complaints and it will be interesting to see how many boast about big downloads next week.

It's all a bit academic because in a few years we'll have UFB and you'll be able to choose a different provider if yours does a complete change in profile such as has happened this weekend.  You'll just cancel your service and flick to someone else.

Behodar: I was able to get through earlier but I went to "report a fault" rather than "technical assistance".

Just called and reported it as a fault and got to speak to someone. He was very helpful and checked my connection etc and said everything was working but has noted there have been a lot of problems in Hataitai and told I will just going to have to sit it out and wait until Monday or until the novelty wears off!

pretty much exactly what i got told (i'm in hataitai too). very peeved at being told tough sh!t.

faults really didn't want to do anything or escalate anywhere either.

Arghhh!!!

My speeds have been normal since that start, been maxing connection at 1.85/1.90MB/s
(Telstra Cable CHCH)

Gaming is not good my usual 250 ping jumps up to around 500 (without downloads running)

Hataitai certainly seems to be hit hard. I wonder if it's all surrounding areas of Wellington?
