I think he raises some semi-valid points, especially about the phone. However it's not Vodafone that decides to sell the phone with 32meg of memory - It's SonyEricsson. When you buy a handcam does it come with 500 blank media's?
The phone heats up and runs out quickly on a 3G call? Well duh, it says as much in the manual (at least for battery life when making a 3G call)

His biggest mistake is that he can't seperate the phone from the service, though given VF's marketing policy, VF likes to tie the two together as well (the one customer experience)
His review though jumps from complaints about the phone to the service to the phone.
After reading it a few times I'm still not sure what he's rating at the bottom, is it the phone or the 3G service?

Either way, I don't think "old grumpy guy" is VF's target demographic with 3G...

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I think the issue of central Auckland skipping in and out of GPRS and 3G could be related to Pilot pollution. I am sure Voda will sort that by realigning their antenna arrays. Not a biggy.

Forgive my ignorance, what's pilot pollution?

Pilot Pollution....

CDMA (which will be the same for WCDMA) uses what is called a '4 finger rake' to search and asses pilot signals in an area. One 'finger' searches out pilots whilst the other 3 de-correlate the signals from the various observed pilots. If more than 3 pilots are seen as having the same signal strength the mobile device doesn't understand how to react.

ok.... interesting.. (pilot polution) so does anyone know how long its going to take vodafone to fix it!

Its pretty embarrassing when people see your new phone, however you are unable to demonstrate any cool features because your in town! "it works great out west.. honest"

Is there anyway to make the phone lock onto a cell for longer? or to only hop around 3G sites?

Generally to fix Pilot Pollution you have to tilt your antenna arrays in downward direction. The downside could be reduced coverage. Another downside with Pilot Pollution is Frame Error Rate. The higher the FER the less reliable the data transfer.

optimisation of w-cdma (or any CDMA based networks) networks takes a long time - especially when you are doing it for the first time. They are completely different beasts to GSM/GPRS (which are time division multiplexed) oriented networks. Add in the fact that the 3G device has to deal with both CDMA and GPRS and it becomes even more complex. Even though Vodafone has used the same sites (and put in a whole lot of new sites) you are dealing with different propogation characteristics between the networks and different fading characteristics - which become even more pronounced in an in-building environments and will change as the network gets loaded up. VF will have tested the network in a simulated load state but that is not the same as real people moving around trying to use services.

Expect it to take months to iron out the bugs - the only long term fix will be getting rid of the existing GSM network which is not happening anytime soon

I meant deal with both W-CDMA and GPRS - not meaning to confuse anyone

Surely though Nokia was contracted to build and deploy the network for vodafone. Nokia one would think would send expertise to assist in building a decent start platform. An important thing for me is not having any trouble calling with the fallback to gsm for voice.
Data it automatically reinitiates but having to make multiple calls instead of one would be a killer.

I suppose its a fair comment that the older it gets the more refined it becomes..

How does the billing work then? If you keep auto reconnecting for data does Voda round to the nearest 10KB each time you disconnect? Probably a mute point at the moment because services are free.....

It can take quite a bit of time to get a new network sorted. It took Telecom a year to sort out all the Pilot Pollution issues with CDMA.

Gremlin: Noticed something interesting last night, I had picked up a 3G booklet from DSE yesterday, was flicking through it to see if there was anything interesting in there I hadn't already read.

Near the back of the brochure the 3G pricing plans were listed, it had a sticker placed over what was obviously some earlier pre-printed prices.

Seems to me VF may have made a late decision to change their pricing with the inclusion of an extra plan. Peeling off the sticker revealed the following original pricing lineup

VMC Lite - 50MB @ $45
VMC Everyday - 120MB @ $65
VMC Unleasshed - 1GB @ $132

Stuff actually quoted $132 in their 3G article, wonder where they got their facts from??

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/manawatustandard/0,2106,3373801a6410,00.html

I wonder if initially Vodafone were going to offer cheaper prices for unsubsidised non term data cards (like they offer cheaper plans for voice non term) but later changed it?

Somebody please explain to Mr. Peter Nowak that music downloading is not a 3G feature. Its a platform you can use in any network. So if its mess, its not because of 3G.

And if he can run home to make video calls to abroad for almost nothing instead of using 3G phone for 1.99NZD per minute, then he can run home too to download some FREE music from the net and listen it on his PC.
Holy cow! Mobile phones = mobility. Thats what you have to pay. And you decide whether you will pay or not.

I was shocked after reading his article. How those guys can publish dunno.

Finally he has to decide who to blame: Sony V800 or Voda 3G?
