No one said it was like this for everyone, but I would hope those people who do have it good at least have sympathy for those of us who don't.

I have gone from having a good connection to one that's barely useable for anything but basic web browsing

On calling TelstraClear I get told there isn't anything wrong with my connection and it is because of the free data weekend. If you think anyone who has been adversely affected shouldn't have a gripe with that I don't know what to say!

I don't want free data, all I want is my connection to work as it should, but that has been affected by bad decisions on TelstraClear's behalf and the general greed of people who will take anything if its there for free. If people really need the stuff they are downloading this weekend why don't they have larger data allowances and do it all the time? I bet most people are just downloading lots of stuff because they can for free, not because they want/need it.

KiwiNZ: I am paying for Broadband I expect Broadband.

It's very interesting comment really.

I'm getting ~4/2 BIR at present.  So that is BB yes?... or no?...

I'm also getting ~9% packet loss at Level 3 in the .us.

So my latency is well bent out of shape.  But on dialup I would have had a better gaming experience simply because I wasn't loosing so many packets.

But what am I really paying for?  The service description is very limited if I check the Telstra web site.  I doubt it even talks about latency or packet loss or constancy.

So what are we paying for at all?

It does raise some interesting consumer questions.

Give this weeks events, if you're not happy, but in a contract for the next X months, do you now have the right to just request a cancellation as the service you were sold is clearly different to the one you had?

Personally I suspect most people aren't going to be to unhappy about the weekend and will consider it a bonus.  I know I've won so far, I've tested a pile of systems today that are much easier to test when they're under load and I didn't have to set up a test platform to mimic the issues.

I've realised that I need to focus on QoS for my VoIP service.

TelstraClear's advertisements claim that "customers will be able to Skype as much as they want!" during this free broadband weekend promotion. So... has anyone actually managed to have a successful skype video call with someone overseas this weekend?

Skillie: I am getting great value out of the free data weekend - about 180GB extra for free!

I will think twice before condemning this trial as a failure...

As I say, the only thing this is doing is giving opportunities for people who aren't prepared to pay for what they use to take take take, and those of us who'd just like to be able to use what we pay for can't! Seems like you're a prime example as your greed has meant others are having poor service this weekend

absolutely agree

That was my plan for a few hours time. There being a 13 hour time difference with the UK it would be a bit unfair to do it in the middle of the night.

What I do know is along with other problems I have not been able to listen to internet radio today. Normally listening to a 128kbps stream without a hitch whilst doing whatever we want, but today it won't even play a 24kbps stream without pausing while not doing anything else! That is just pathetic!

I will try using Skype this evening but know if it's like the rest of the day there won't be much point and I will just use my cell data instead.

the thing is those folks who aren't affected probably don't know that they are causing a problem for anybody else.

what pi$$es me off is the complete don't give a sh!t attitude from TC. they should be going around the locations like hataitai and doing what they can to fix things, rather than just saying wait till the weekend is over. what will happen next time?

Yip, me too!  I had a 56k modem.

Neil, what's your take on this ;)

No, you didn't. Dial-up max at 56 Kbps. You are getting 325 Kbps according to yourself.

Folks, please stop confusing Kbps and KBps. You are not helping.

timmmay: I just realised I had limited my connection on my end - doh! When I switched that off it went from 2Mb to now sit between 6Mbps and 10Mbps, over my VPN. That's 70+% of what I usually get, with every man and his dog using the international bandwidth. I'm impressed!

Doh indeed.

I think you have already proved that you are not one of the people affected so wasn't much point in replying really!

fair enough. thanks for pointing that out. However it's certainly not behaving like broadband, and it's certainly not what i'm paying for.

and it's certainly not the customer service i'm paying for that's for sure.

does anyone know where or to whom i can complain?

but they are staying remarkably quiet on the subject. and their faults line doesn't care.

latest test on tc's own speedtest to wellington (from hataitai).
Download Speed: 592 kbps (74 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2254 kbps (281.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 16 ms
Sat Dec 03 2011 18:55:27 GMT+1300 (New Zealand Daylight Time)

Shouldn't TC be able to see who's causing the issues and bring in the fair use clause??
