It’s likely it will be a Gen2. However it will only work as bundled on a Vodafone account.
It cannot be activated against vtv.nz (standalone)

So whilst you could use it on any isp connection, it will be tied to a Vodafone Account and cannot be sold.

Cheers
Grant

Thank you, Grant. Sounds like you would need to keep your Vodafone account alive to be able to continue using VTV for on account which sounds fair.

I wonder how they differentiate that on account VTV box vs the standalone. Must be based on some sort of a hardware identifier.

Just got caught out on this recently.  When offered the VTV as part of a re-sign bundle last year we didn't appreciate that the service came with an ongoing cost once that bundled offer expired.  We didn't subscribe to any of the paid VTV offerings so just thought it was a basic TV and streaming box, but no, access is clearly controlled by VF.  They refused to do anything on the VTV for another re-sign term, the exact price was a bit vague but the difference between the monthly cost with and without the VTV was about $17.  They didn't seem to care about the hardware (Gen 2) and agreed I could just throw it in the bin if I didn't want it.  Effectively it's just a brick unless I pay to use it.  I haven't checked if it has indeed stopped working, but VF made it quite clear access to anything on the device would be cancelled.      There must be some hardware identifier between retail and VF supplied/bundled boxes.

That seems nuts. Good way to add to e-Waste.

The V2 boxes have sold for as little as $99, so why not 'unlock' the box after a 12 month term for customers receiving one as part of an on-account plan, and allow them to keep the box?

Is this for all new units (retail included), only units sold through Vodafone or only VTV2 replacing VTV1?

Good question. I'd like to know the answer too.

An update
Today I have received my new vtv replacement box and I can confirm it is a Gen2.
Right now I have both the Gen 1 and the slightly smaller Gen2 device.

I decided to re-plug the old Gen1 box back (after all I believe the problem was fixable). Upon plugging it back in I immediately received a message along the lines of I needed to call Vodafone as the device has been deactivated.

After further talks with Vodafone customer service, they've advised that they can only activate one vtv box at a time with the plan I am currently on.
They've also advised that the on account vtv box gets tied to your Vodafone account via the serial number. And based on my plan only one serial number can be linked.
The only other option I had is to upgrade and get the sky package which would then allow the plan to have multiple vtv box registrations (I didnt).

Interesting, so all of us VF customers that were migrated from T box to VF box and were chuffed with the generosity when told that even if we leave Vodafone we get to keep the box, are probably in for a surprise. It will be deregistered and won’t work if I understand correctly.

As long as you keep VTV account open you are good to go on any ISP. I am an Orcon customer and have VTV Gen2. It is no different to have a Netflix, Disney or TVNZ subscription.

Update on mine:  A courier bag mysteriously tuned up with a return bag addressed to Brightpoint.  A couple of minutes of on-line chat to the VF call center confirmed I had to return the VTV and all the peripherals or I would be charged for it.  I guess I won't be throwing it in the bin after all!  Seems like a failed business model to me.

Was your VTV Gen2 acquired from retail or linked to a Vodafone account?

Very different situations according to the latest information.

To clarify then (as queried above). If you decide to close your Vodafone account and move to another provider the VTV box will stop working?

Is it linking to a broadband service or any Vodafone service will keep it working for example you have a mobile account can you keep the Vodafone TV on that account?

I see buying used Vodafone TV Gen2 from Trade Me just became very dangerous.

We don't watch much "free to air TV" on the Gen 2 VTV box but last night tried to watch a TV3 program.  Our normal consumption is Netflix, Prime or TVNZ on Demand, on these services the scroll back/forward pause etc all work as expected.  On the live TV3 channel the experience was awful, no fine control back either 10secs ish or 30 mins, forward 10secs ish or to the current point in the live program.  I guess I expected to be able to move backwards to review a missed piece of the program in a controlled manner and then move forward again.  What is the expected behaviour when watching live TV channels.

We don't watch much broadcast TV either - mostly recorded and on demand free to air.
I had a bad experience with TV3 broadcast yesterday - watching the end of the Lego show. We had paused it earlier, no drama, then tried to fast forward past the last lot of ads, wham! Went to the next show. Watched the end of Lego using the 3 Now app. I think the experience used to be better. Perhaps it will improve again.
VTV has its problems. I still think it is the best of a bad bunch for those of us who who don't want to pay to view.

Sorry for the late response. Our box was purchased retail from 100% store. It actually sat in storage in garage for a year. We plugged back ain a couple months back and all was go without issue. Also we are pleased with the stability now

@prevaljo: It's normal behaviour for a programme that's restricted rights / not recordable and is the case for LEGO Masters. The only thing you can do is pause it briefly, and even then if you leave it paused too long it starts playing the next programme.

What is interesting is Vodafone also sells VTV outright as well. I wonder those versions be tied up to your Vodafone account too?
