The static ranges are excluded from the port 25 filter so once you're on one as long as you have the right access to the server you're sending through then you shouldn't have any issues with it.

Do you have the option to request to be removed from the 25 filtering rather than possibly having to come against this problem again in the future when you start charging static IP's? xtra has an online form you fill out to remove you from the filtering?

I understand if its not possible.

Snikch:
closetgeek: Thanks for reply Snikch,

I'm hoping that there is also a third option, i.e. unblocking port 25 (now possible with a Static IP) will allow me to set my smtp server as mail.mydomain.com and therefore I will not need to either run myown mailserver or change settings depending on where I'm connecting from.

So you have a website hosted somewhere, and you are connecting to the hosts smtp server? I don't think that that is anything to do with port 25 being blocked, as when I signed up to xnet it was one of the things I checked before signing up, and xnet said they DO NOT block port 25...

I know that my web host used to allow smtp relay for my domains at mail.mydomain.com but nowadays do not, and I must use my ISP.

You really want to relay thru your mail host since that means that the dns records are correct so its less likely to get tagged as spam by recipients. My web guy basically said no way to putting my isp's mail server into the SPF records which would allow me to mail thru it since it has no authentication to stop anyone else relaying and sending spam/viruses as me.

There is some other port that is a standard for authenticated smtp to run on for authenticated uses to use for relay thru it. Its not running on my host because it has some issues with the MTA being used having two ports running with different configurations or something, but its an option to ask your host about if you constantly find that your port 25 is blocked like at hotspots etc.

An unexpected consequence of switching ISP's from Xtra, was that when trying to send email (from my email accounts that I manage via my hosting provider), I came up against a port 25 block. This was fixed by setting xnet as my SMTP server, however I'm hoping that this isn't going to bite me in the backside when I'm trying to send email when not connected to xnet, i.e. from my network at work or when travelling and on a T3G card (as I will be most of next week). I was informed a static IP (needed to unblock port 25) would be ten bucks a month, so I'm keen not to have to pay that as it negates some of the cost benefit I anticipated when switching.

Most hosting providers should have an alternative port to 25 that you can use for outgoing email server. Check with your hosting provider; this should save you hassles if you use other Internet connections too.

I said that I would add a few lines once I had a chance to get setup with VoiP so just to tie up the loose ends on this thread here goes......

Set up with VFX was fairly straightforward. There was a standard email generated when my account was activated that contained some generic information that proved superfluous. This was a little frustrating as I was directed in the welcome email to create a profile rule for my WAG54GP2 so I spent an hour or so trying to figure out how to do this, to then be advised - after raising a support ticket - that I didn't need to do this step. It wasn't a biggy but I did waste an hour or so searching forums etc trying to locate where on my router I should create such a profile rule.

To balance that though there are many positives;

(1) I had prematurely asked for the second line on my WAG54GP2 to be unblocked. (Premature as my account hadn't even been set up when I impatiently made the request). It was a delight to see that when my account went live, that line 2 was unlocked from the get go. Xnet's left hand clearly meet up for coffee with their right hand on a regular basis. Smile

(2) Line quality is terrific - to the point that I owe an apology for the years of profanity aimed at a beaten up old cordless phone that sounds awful on my telecom line but markedly better on the VFX line

(3) Web interface is intuitive and easy to use

(4) Again, support and customer service staff a delight to deal with

So, to summarise - week one in the life of a new Xnet customer has been a very positive experience for both changing ISP and setting up a new VoiP service. Good products, competitive pricing and might I say, outstanding customer attention have all combined to exceed my expectations.

You did not have to setup the rule probably because it was already "VFX Enabled".  Mine was not, and it was a matter of finding the correct line in the setup page (searched for 5 minutes, then read the e-mail properly... I'm male).  You would not have access to the voice stup page, it is locked once provisioned.

My second line was also unlocked from the start, even though I did not ask for it.  I think it is just part of their customer service, and confidence in a great service that no one would disconnect without very good reason.  It also allows you to sign up with other services and find out how bad they are.

Now if only I can convince myself it is worth paying $4 per month on forwarding all my incoming Telecom calls to VFX and getting rid of line filters...
