Oldmanakbar: Just an update. I have been talking with someone at Telstra for the last couple of days. Sending traceroutes back and forth.
"There was a fix put in place yesterday afternoon by our Systems Designs team affecting international browsing issues. They implemented a fix to a broken internet network loop."
Oldmanakbar: Hi guys,
My question for you guys is are you experiencing the same thing? It is bloody frustrating not being able to surf what I want, when I want. 90% of what I browse/download is offshore as it is for the majority of you reading this post.
Cheers

freitasm: Yesterday I tried downloading an iTunes movie rental. It usually takes 30 minutes to download a movie, but it took about ten hours (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=44&topicid=60479).
Today I've heard a rumour that TelstraClear had a deal gone wrong with another provider... That could explain things.
Interesting test, if you are on TelstraCable - go to speedtest.net and try the test with Wellington CityLink and then with either Napier or Christchurch. CityLink gives me equivalent slowness to Los Angeles - Napier and Chch are more than 10x faster. So the two fastest cable networks in NZ might as well be on different sides of the world - go figure!
OpenD: just moved house recently and the new house was set up for Telstra Cable and so we switched. I have not experienced any improvement in speed over our own Telecom ADSL1 connection! I thought we might have a badly installed connection - but seems not from this thread.

Cable is certainly faster than ADSL
cyril7:Cable is certainly faster than ADSL
Yes and no, Telecom now claim that 70% of Wellington ADSL customers are experiencing sync speeds of at least 17MB/s, my speedtest results give me 15Mb/s TCP throughput anytime of the day.
I dont believe the HFC network has the advantage it once did, and at the massive $290 premium for the 25Mb/s connection I dont think its a valid comparison.

sleemanj: Heh, TelstraClear and "soon" in the same sentence. If I didn't know better I'd have said you must be new around here.

I'd love to say more but in this case "soon" certainly means soon.
