Hi guys,

Having worked at an ISP helpdesk before I am hesitant to spend to obligatory 45 minutes on hold, so I thought I would table this here.

Over the last week my browsing speed for anything outside of NZ has dropped off to what I would describe as dialup pre jetstart era.

Gaming, Ventrillo etc are fine in NZ and AU. But any sort of standard browsing is just pointless.
With netstat running I see around 7-10k speeds loading pages and pictures offshore, local is totally fine.

I get the usual 9ish MB down, 2MB up on my speedtests, and my ping is fine, no packet loss. Hell even the speedtest page takes 20 seconds to load.
I can whack a rev wireless card into a laptop and its all totally fine.

My question for you guys is are you experiencing the same thing? It is bloody frustrating not being able to surf what I want, when I want. 90% of what I browse/download is offshore as it is for the majority of you reading this post.

Cheers

Yup, International has been horrid lately. Not only have page loads been slow, but also web downloads that usually come down at 200+ kbs have been trickling down at 28-30k.

Havent done any torrents since Sunday, when i managed to get 500k+. So possibly they're ok.

I signed up just so I could add a seconder (or fourther by the current reply count).  Terrible download speed over last week or so in the evenings.  I've tried to download things in the evening (from a 5pm on Monday) and gave up in the end.  Saw some funny sort of surging, where the download would sit on 20-25k with occasional jumps up to 60-70k.

Tried again the next morning and get the normal sort of speed, which is about 10 times that speed.  Its like being back on ADSL but this has only just happened where as ADSL was alway crap in the evening.

Bad for me too. notalwaysright.com is a prime example of abysmal performance over the last couple of days.

A week later and still the same issues. If not worse.

Between 7pm and Midnight I basically get dial up speed for anything outside of NZ. Are we seriously this constrained for international bandwidth?

I did some tests of random images pulled from google last night, so obviously varying domains. Average speed over 3mb of pictures opening was a whopping 4.9k a second. Just for giggles we plugged in an old dialup modem and went to town on a different machine on a telecom dialup connection. 5.3k a second for the same test....on dialup.

Dialup beating a 10mb cable connection.

That isn't just slow, its totally unacceptable.

Why has it suddenly become so noticeable all of a sudden?

The next morning after these tests, at around 9am, the average speed was what you would expect from cable. A 300k picture loading in one second etc.

It is obviously load somewhere as it is only during prime time. But 5k a second.... Come on Telstra, sort it out.

Editing as I forgot to ask the obvious question. Is anyone on cable (be it WGN or CHCH) NOT getting this issue? Would be interesting to know.

Yeah, it's terrible. It's also not limited to cable; I'm on DSL in Whakatane and it's bad here too. I'd have switched to Telecom by now if I wasn't scared of the 12-month contract!

You're not alone. On Saturday things seemed to improve but they're now back to how they've been for the last couple of weeks, ssssssssslllllllllloooooooooooooowwwwwwww.

I've been a TCL cable customer since before it even launched (I was one of a handful of customers who got to trial the cable modem service) and have always been loyal to it. For the first time ever I'm really being to question why I bother dealing with such a truely dysfunctional company.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been with TCL for 11 years, but over the last 6 months or so I've also been wondering why I'm still putting up with it.

I haven't experienced slow speeds as you describe, and I'm on cable in Wellington. I have been getting some slow page loads, but not regularly. Have you done a trace route to a server you're getting bad speeds on? Just to check for unusually high latency and strange routes.

me too. and when complaining the attitude is just bad "we offer competitive speeds in nz".

i even offered to give them more money, but they declined the offer.

today i ordered secondary line, nekkid ADSL2+ from $ANOTHER_PROVIDER. time will tell if it becomes the primary.

I am not seeing slow speeds on cable (10Mbps plan) except of course for the seven moth old YouTube problem. I do notice some very frequent transparent proxy faults though, mainly problems loading some sites, but these are usually occurrences that last for a couple of hours.

SLOOOOOWWW and unstable in Christchurch currently, I bet it's than damn transparent proxy.

It's almost enough to make me want to tunnel my HTTP through a VPS somewhere.

Just an update. I have been talking with someone at Telstra for the last couple of days. Sending traceroutes back and forth.

I will say for the last two days that it has been fine, but I got this snippet..

"There was a fix put in place yesterday afternoon by our Systems Designs team affecting international browsing issues. They implemented a fix to a broken internet network loop. Not sure how permanent this is, or if there is to be more work done, so please let us know if you should experience the problem again.

As you mentioned the issue happens more often then not, so send us results when the service has degraded again. Look forward to hearing from you when possible. I will keep your case open for the next 2 weeks."

OK - I have just found my suburb has been upgraded to ADSL2+. So if I were to move, what would be an equivalent to my current 50GB TCL plan? I dont care about gaming but good youtube and general browsing is important. Also we do our fair share of Skype here so good upload speed is desirable?

Thanks

Well I'm in the process of having Slingshot Just Broadband provisioned. I am currently on an 80GB Cable plan.

I figure:

$80 a month for 25GB, full speed both ways. $50 for 50GB of data that rolls over what you don't use.

$150 for 80GB data.

In your case this will be $110. With Slingshot you get free off peak downloading between 2am-8am on this plan so if you schedule your downloads you could be saving $30 a month. If you happen to download everything on peak, buying a $50 data block every second month will average out to $105 a month for 50GB a month.

It's definitely better price wise, yet to see how the performance compares though but I've just had a cabinet down my street so..... Here's hoping?
