I thought VF had just launched a new network ?
Does this mean all the new 3G handsets are soon obselete , and from the article it sounds as though HSDPA will only be a match for EVDO in performance.

i'm not sure why either network should be obsessing about data speeds when so few people use their networks for data.

how about some _real_ data pricing competition?

Perhaps we should have a new thread for this discussion only.

In my case, yes, this is right - I don't use walled gardens or portals, my main use if for e-mail and work while away. Yes, speed is important, since my work requires access to websites, hundreds of RSS feeds, image downloads, etc.

There is a distinction between consumer and enterprise. And between applications within enterprise. If you have a telemetry/M2M system then even GPRS (gasp!) would do the trick.

I feel like we have been over and over this subject many times before. People need to understand that mobile data is now main stream not a niche. Thousands of people rely on it and adoption is growing at an incredibly fast rate.

Would love to share number with you but I can not. Frustrating really because if you knew the numbers you would be absolutely stunned! It still stuns me.

I'd love to see some figures.

The general public's awareness of mobile internet access seems to be zero. I often google something infront of people, and they're just amazed that this is possible - or they're amazed i would pay the price this costs. If you want to try out mobile data, on a casual plan, you can rack up a huge bill very fast.

Most cellphone users in NZ are just plain scared to start their wap browsers - they're convinced they'll be charged just for starting it, and they dont' know how much that charge will be.There isn't a general understanding amongst customers of either network that the telco's portal is free - and there's a justified fear of using data of any kind because you don't how big any http response is going to be once you start mobile web - just one 404 error page, with large graphics intended for a full web browser, and you could get charged $2-$3.

Yes - thousands. Believe me I see the figures. I think you are confusing consumer customers with corporates and ME customers. Off course consumers are going to be hesitant. Business less so.

Agree! What is expensive for a consumer is not so for a business - it is just a cost that compounds the total price of their services or goods. If they want cheaper services to be offered to compete with the next-door shop, then they will try getting a better deal on mobile data - or any other cost on their chain.

Remember, the cost is relative to the benefits it brings. As I said, consumers might think it is expensive, while a large enteprise will say "is that all?". YMMV.

Im sorry johnr, when evaluating the amount of correctness, once something is totally correct, then its at 100% and to exceed 100% is impossible.

(e.g. you cant give your boss a 120% effort commitment, by definition, 100% is the most you can give, and anyone who offers more is making false promises...)

I agree with the sentiment posted though, how many consumers purchase 10meg ethernet connections from Telecom/TelstraClear/OtherISP. No one I can think of.

Who uses the post office much these days for sending letters? I'd guess not very many of us here.

Customer and business are two very different markets and the money isn't in consumer...

Me. It is a bliss to download updates from MSDN... Or to download RSS feeds.

But, mind you, it is the same cable - only changes are in their routers.
