tonynz how do you expect people that work in retail selling phones and people in the call centre to know all the in and outs about DRM, come on think about it!!! just some further info it took TCNZ about 1 year to get there CDMA network running good give them a chance if you can do better you get out there and build it but I am quite sure nokia have better experience!!

John has a point; the Telecom 027 (CDMA) network was plain bad for a good year after it was launched (dropped calls, bad coverage, and poor call audio quality). Things can only get better not worse.
But customers do get disappointed when after all the hype the product does not live up to expectations. My girl friends son complains they don’t update bro town often enough! At the Mount and Tauranga were I live the service is fine (more coverage would be nice). But I have never dropped a 3g call, hands over just fine. Andrew

I have found 3g it to be fantastic, though in Auckland CBD i do have problems, sometimes iffy coverage and similar hassles though I can now make a call over the harbour bridge fine, something that never worked on 2.5g.

I just got yet another a message from vodafone saying "you will get a $20.73 credit due to incorrect GPRS charging, we aploligize" (it's real, from Vodafone, not forwarded and yes my balance did go up)

It's a shame 027's voice quality is so shrill and robotic, UMTS 3g put's it to total shame and 025...... well.....

CDMA EVRC only, Qcelp 13k when activated is great :-)

At the moment, I'm having difficulty with them over incorrect GPRS charges (which I'm 'earning' when I browse Voda live (strange I know)). They keep 'escalating' it to solution services or tech support but haven't stopped the charges from appearing, or disappearing for that matter.

I expect a huge credit on my normal (postpaid) account too.. I have paid them over $100 in Vlive charges and double upped data, I have a data bundle which does always seem to rate so I get charged "casual" rates in addition.

Well at least they seem to have spotted it.. it's vary hard to speak to people in Voda that jnow what they are doing I know.

This would have been downloading on VLIVE on my Prepaid.

Have a look at all the overseas 3G networks, forum posts etc and you will see the issues with handsets, networks ie droped calls etc.

I have used Vodafone 3G and find most of the time its ok and there has been the odd occassion that the phone has lost 3G.

In these forums there are gems of info like if you understand how cell sites work and how the panels or antennas can be moved 10 cm one way which can have a huge impact on the coverage footprint. Or you might be on a fringe of one cell site and be out coverage of the next site. There is RF strength, topography of even hills and houses all affect you reception.

Vodafone 3G like Telecom will be constantly tweaked updated and new cell sites put in place.

Bashing Vodafone or Telecom is not the answer

In this case call Vodafone and lodge a coverage issue ASK FOR A JOB NUMBER

supply day date time exact location handset type (software version)

The more people like with anything stick there hand up and say hey we have a issue you will get noticed. Take 5 of your friends to that location and make some calls and all ring up and lodge a job

Vodafone have just installed a new sectored Micro cellsite on top of a street lamp at the end of my road (pakuranga).. A 2g with GPRS one too!!!! I wonder why? it's a 3g "capable upgrade" according to the techs.

I wonder what it's data feed is? There is no Microwave repeater on it ?????

Perhaps it just repeats the existing signal at that location. (For more signal strength in your street) Rather than a microwave link back to the network(capacity site).

Viewing GPRS/3G data service why don't you guys use MYA (Manage your Account) on the vodafone.co.nz website then you can view the length of the session the time and how much traffic was moved

@paradoxsm: You can deliver 2Meg off a standard copper pair, that's probably all it is.

A lot of the new 3G sites here in Wgtn have no microwave linking back. Does anybody know why when Vodafone have relied almost 100% on their own microwave links in the past they have now decided to switch to data circuits for a lot of the new sites?

What sort of impact is this going to have with HSDPA when potentially they could be requiring 15Mb bandwidth per site within a few years?

Warning: 3 sentences of total guessing follows:

Wouldn't they only use Microwave links when they don't have an easily accessible copper path?
Or do they use their own Microwave links so as to not have to pay for last mile?
Most Microwave kit is only 2Meg, isn't it? So the use of Microwave would limit their sites.

That's all just me guessing from what I know of IP networks, also the last Microwave link I was sending data over was 155Meg so I'm not even sure about my 2Meg statement.
