invisibleman18:

I initially thought that to be the case, but on looking at my Vodafone bill again it does look like the TV portion was only charged up to 28 February and not for the first half of March which would usually have been in my billing cycle. Will have to see what happens in the next Vodafone bill.

So what i expect would have happen is that after the 28th feb they would have run an overnight process to change the service codes on your account from vodafone --> sky (sky would have had some of your details already) and then do billing after that.  Don't worry they won't forget to bill you :P

Your change of account number would have been because a house/address use to have an account number (not you as a person) this change around 2016/17 to be by person and not an address

Yeah I've already had the first Sky bill which is for the correct monthly amount that I was paying Vodafone and says it covers the period of 19 March to 18 April. So does appear that 1-18 March is not charged by anyone.

I've just heard from Vodafone about refunds. People should start receiving emails about this soon:

We’re emailing VodafoneTV standalone customers who purchased their box outright today and tomorrow, with what we hope you agree is a generous offer to compensate the loss of the service. We have tried to put customer needs front and centre to help them transition to another platform, and pro-rated the reimbursement amount for fairness.

Depending on when they activated their VodafoneTV box, there are three different reimbursement options, as below:

0 - 6 months (1 June 2021 - 9 Dec 2021): $179
7 - 18 months (1 July 2020 to 31 May 2021): $100
Over 18 months (23 Sept 2019 to 30 June 2020): $75

Note: customers won’t be able to claim reimbursement until May, when the process goes live, but we wanted to inform them about next steps since it’s been three months since we announced the platform would be shutting down. In May, when the reimbursement process is live in the VodafoneTV portal (vtv.nz), we’ll contact them again with more instructions.

To reiterate, the decision to close VodafoneTV was a difficult one, but necessary so we can continue to invest into areas like customer service, network, and ICT to provide customers with great connectivity and digital services, instead of continuing to run VodafoneTV as a loss-making service. It’ll keep operating as normal until 30 September 2022 (even if customers request a reimbursement prior to this date).

After playing with the SmartVU I bought around Christmas time for a week at the time, I then put it away.  Dragged it out a fortnight ago and put it in place of my VTV (purchased in June 2019). The experience has been positive, with a little bit of live TV streamed, a little bit of Netflix, and quite a bit of Disney+ while the kids watch movies and I finish The Mandalorian.

I've not been able to get the SmartVU remote to control my Veon TV's volume directly, so turn the TV volume up a little louder and use the SmartVU's own volume control to bring the level down a bit.  As a bonus the CEC (?) allows the SmartVU to turn the Veon on and off (standby) which the VTV did not do.  This means I rarely have to touch the Veon remote.

What I miss of the VTV:  Being able to 'record' the 6pm news to watch at my leisure, skip through the ads, and view older editions easily.  Going into the broadcaster's app an finding the news program is far far less convenient, plus you have to wait for the episode to be published.  I can no longer start watching the 6pm news at 6:30.  I don't know if this would be enough to shift me to the Sky box when it is released.  (I won't be subscribing to Sky services in the foreseeable future, having never subscribed in the past.)

The amounts they are offering I believe fall short of what was communicated initially. (Full refunds were hinted)

If you have a box that was activated 6 months from the announcement you get a full refund. This would be only a limited amount of people and in my view is disappointing.

I believe should be 12 months. (As this aligns to the warranty period) for the first cut off.

The second would be the > 12 months to 24 months

The third tier is then anyone after 24 months of use.

Agree. I will be fighting for more. $89 for about 1 year of Freeview. Certainly not Free viewing.

I will probably refuse the payment, then look to take my box back to the retailer and ask for a refund as it will not be "fit for purpose". I am sure CGA would consider the device should last more than 2 years.

@Delorean: (Full refunds were hinted)

Any links to this?

"Vodafone will meet all its CGA obligations and support agreements with its retail partners (like The Warehouse Group).  Full details and planning for people eligible for refunds is underway.  This process will start in March/April 2022 and we will contact all customers who are eligible for a refund at that time."

"Don't worry, we will be using the $179 RRP (incl. GST) as the price for calculating refunds.  (even if you received a discount from the retailer you purchased VTV from)."

"We are very committed to making good those who have paid us for the VTV box but only received a limited amount of use.  The refund is not being overlooked and more detail on refund is coming well in advance of the service ending."

@freitasm

Noting specific, hence the word "hinted"

However, as most have pointed out, "reasonable use/life" to give a full refund would not have been in the last 5 months of service. I would thought 12 months from the date of announcement a full refund would be provided. Most consumers could and would have gone back to the retailer and got a refund in December if they had known the 5 month old box is now worth only $100.

It is interesting if you got the first gen box in 2020 you still get $75 back (>24 mths old) whereas a 5 mth old box is $100..

I don't disagree with the approach, its more the timeframes outlined I believe are not fair. in my view they should have been this:

0 - 12 mths 100% refund

12 - 24 mths 75% refund

24 mths + 50% refund

Anyway, the court of public opinion will decide if this is fair or not.

I was told by a reliable source at Vodafone that they consulted with their lawyers to get recommendations on the lowest refunds they could get away with.

I'd suggest these figures are far too low for 7 months onwards and are too course in their implementation.

I can't really complain. Everything is pegged to the RRP of $179 and I only paid $99, so to get $75 back is not a bad deal for ~2years of use. As others have said I'd be a bit pissed if I had bought it just over 6 months before the announcement.

Not really happy at all, and I wonder if this is a breach of the Consumer Guarantees Act. If I purchase something I expect it to last a lot longer than 2 years, and I think that is reasonable.

I activated my VTV on the 28th June 2020, so only a $75 refund. This isn't enough for me to purchase a replacement product.

i can see why in your case but considering my unit has been sitting in a cupboard for the last  year or so i will take anything.

Not at all impressed they think $100 is acceptable for a $180 box that should have gotten many years of use (based on my Igloo and TiVo experiences - people still use the Tivos now for goodness' sake). Sure, we've had some use from the box but even that hasn't been issue free in and of itself. If my fridge stops working, the manufacturer doesn't tell me "oh but you got to use it for a year, so we're only going to give you half the money back" as if I was renting a fridge for a year...

I am pretty disgusted actually. I've spent a lot of time supporting and recommending Vodafone because I genuinely felt like they were making an effort to be customer friendly - apparently not. This just proves you can put lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig.
