Yeah but what I'm getting at is we lose the Cisco as part of the upgrade, so with the new network gear will it be set to DHCP?

Yes. All connections on the new plans (everything delivered via 3.1) will be DHCP.

I believe there will be the option of a static address,in the sense that you can get a static on DSL; a persistently allocated address delivered via DHCP. There will be no statically provisioned addresses (all CPE will need to DHCP their uplink IPs).

I'm glad they realize the only way Cable will survive is by pricing it cheaper than Fibre, and obviously more convenient for those who already have it than to switch.

Still not a fan of them calling it FibreX, it's misleading

I agree that a 24 month contract will discourage many people from upgrading.

For those of us who still have more than two years to wait for fibre, the 24 months may (just) be acceptable.

But it's still not a good look for Vodafone.

That may be the point. The less people take up the speed offer the longer it will take before there is too much contention again. Just a though :)

Same trick they use in the UK, what they call fiber is actually just FTTC.

The key question is what do the consumer get for signing up to a 24month agreement? It was defensible with mobile and with new builds to say 'contract required because we are subsidising the handset' or 'we are having to spend money rolling new network cables into your house' etc.

Term agreements seem to be disappearing relatively quickly from UFB connections, even though the ISP agrees to rent the circuit from chorus for the first 12 months of a new build, regardless of whether you churn. Bigpipe has taken the best gamble here and I think is doing well with it - along with the public message of just being the best big dumb pipe provider and not trying to do everything else like voip and tv.

What seems more indefensible is 'we have a new product here, its so hot you'll need to sign up for 2 years to get it'. And that becomes well tricky with HFC, because the market is now is mostly made up of mature connections: many houses were or are connected to cable, so the only marginal cost is the truck roll to bring the modem out and commission. There may be some tuning required to ensure the best performance on the network, but that would be necessary anyway to deploy any high speed service.

A few years ago, this trick was tried with Voda 4G - term agreement and monthly surcharge to get it. It's part of a go-to-market proposition that looks great on a powerpoint deck and helps people delude themselves into thinking they have a solid strategy and lots of pent-up demand. It lasted all of 2 months till Spark launched 4G.

In today's market, many areas in 2016 have UFB overbuilt where HFC is.

If the 2Y agreement is enforced... the sales will be like the initial ones of the 130/10 plans. Count 'em on one hand.

To a customer, the exact nature of the failure is irrelevant (to a geekzone user it would be interesting, but still irrelevant), cable users in Christchurch were affected by it, ergo, it was a cable issue.

You'd have to be a new customer.

Here's an idea, "Sign Up now and get a free plain old boring modem that is only a modem and nothing else", therefore no 24 month term.

I highly doubt Orcon is giving them away, it's factored into the 24 month plan. If you terminate early then it's $500 to pay, about the price of an Xbox.
