A solution like this runs rings around gmail.
Why?
I don't see the benefit myself, but a cost of $10 per year and no gmail app for the smartphone!
For what it's worth, I switched to Fastmail (an Australian company) and I'm happy with them
Has anyone had forwarding set up yet? It says it takes about 3 days but mine still hasn't started forwarding to my new email address.
So it's now official.
Vodafone are scrapping *all* email in November affecting all domains - clear, VF, paradise as well as other legacy ones.

No that's the amount that Sbiddle said you can pay a year for Activesync as you will see in the quote above. The amount you quote is more like what my investigations found. I have no need for activesync as I do not use Outlook, will never use Outlook (I even convinced my entire work domain not to use Outlook I hate it that much) and really for home email account yes IMAP (hell for many even pop) is totally fine.
People seem to associate EAS/ActiveSync as only being about Outlook.. They totally forget it's the best protocol out there and certainly the best solution IMHO for mobile email.
Even if you only rely on webmail and a mobile device IMHO EAS/ActiveSync is the only solution you should really be looking at. When they are providers even offering this for free there aren't any reasons to look elsewhere.

What are the advantages over ActiveSync over simple IMAP? I know very little about this stuff

My recommendation is always to register a domain and move to a proper mail hosting company. Without naming any names you can easily have a domain and fully hosted EAS/ActiveSync mail which delivers significant benefits particularly if you want mail on multiple devices and phones all for NZ$10 per year depending on the type of domain you want. A solution like this runs rings around gmail.
So made the domain 2 years ago and yet to find anyone offering mail only for $10 a year (basic IMAP is all I wanted not even a website) so stuck with IHUG. Everywhere was way to expensive. If you can list this NZ $10 a year provider would be appreciated.
I didn't mean $10 for the email, I meant from NZ$10 depending on the type of domain you want. Places like Zohomail offer advanced email with EAS/Activesync for free, so you just need to point your $10 domain at it.

About time!
So just to confirm - as long as said Clear/Ihug/Wave etc user remains a Vodafone customer, Vodafone will forward their mail to an email address of their choosing.
So the best way to go about this would be to - 1 - setup a new account of the user's choosing - Gmail for example, then - 2 - contact Vodafone and ask for the mail to be forwarded to that new account?
Going to be a lot of people affected by this, but it's definitely a good decision. It's more frustrating having a crappy email service than none at all.
Thanks.

Now I'll have to go get a gmail account or something.
