I have received a message from a moderater advising me to stop making comments. I was not aware making comments about peoples CGA rights was against the rules of the forum.

I agree the majority of people may be happy with the purchase offer, but one size does not fit all and I do not see why we should all be expected to agree and be 100% united in our thoughts.

Please stop with the Vodafone TV comments - I get you’re unhappy but you don’t need to keep doing it. You’re actually very much incorrect with the majority of them. Thanks.

Is there a rule about posting a private message? Or advising why I am likely to get banned?

Why bring a private message into public view? Also, it is completely off topic.

You are simply not making it easier for you.

It is on topic as it is asking me not to make comments about this topic - how can that be off topic. This reply is off topic, but is a reply to your message about my reply being off topic when it is topical - so I therefore believe this reply to be on topic now as well.

Are you intentionally trolling? It's off-topic because you are discussing a mod advice. It's nothing to do with the Vodafone TV retirement but your behaviour.

Hamish I thank you for facing up to a group such as this, I'm sure dealing with people like me must be frustrating, but...

I would call out "content deals" as irrelevant...

Not a problem, I don't find it frustrating.  Both Vodafone, and me personally, have invested quite a bit over the last 6 years into this latest iteration of Vodafone TV, and so I'm committed to clearing up some guesswork here that can sometimes arrive at unfair conclusions!

In terms of the relevance of content deals on the security of the box, the content deals are central to the security design.  Vodafone has to provide content studios with responses to their technical questionnaires answering how the box complies with MPAA content security best practice (refer https://www.motionpictures.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/MPA-Best-Practices-Common-Guidelines-V4.10-FINAL.pdf)

In terms of your hope that the VTV Broadcom chip might retain a pin similar to the "a Rockchip RK3399, or similar, can be forced to boot from a simple internal USB bootloader by shorting out the NVM chipset line, stopping normal boot" : The Technical Questionnaires from the Studios specifically asks (and then actually verifies via testing) whether any hardware exists that allows for sideloading or rooting to occur.  The Vodafone Group design removes all hardware options, test jig tags etc so that we are able to pass the studio requirements.  Vodafone Group does this to ensure the best commercial position on global Sport and Entertainment content negotiations with studios and content partners.

In terms of this "particular box was an NZ-only release rather than globally-controlled", the bootloader is global and protected by Vodafone Group.  The box firmware is specific to NZ, and is developed by Vodafone Group based on a common code set used in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Romania etc.  NZ shares an "IP-only" version that's very close to Vodafone Portugal's implementation.  Other markets have a version that manages the integration of a live broadcast TV tuner on the box (either terrestrial or Satellite broadcast) so that they can avoid expensive content deals with the local free-to-air broadcasters (again, the technology design is often driven by the content deals).

Thankyou for providing a decent detailed answer on these things rather than a spiel a CSR would give over the Phone. Thinking of all the Ewaste from these "useless" boxes makes my Blood boil. Its sad that the MAFIAA still has control over this crap in this day and age, I do my best to obtain content legally if a DRM free source is available. One streaming service I would like to use actively blocks international Credit Cards, Paypal Accounts and even visiting their Website without a US IP gets blocked.

In regards to the refund, has anyone seen the funds in the bank yet?

Last week - just log in to your https://vtv.nz or https://tv.vodafone.co.nz/ and fill out a form to request it (with any luck). You should have got an email telling you this. Bit of a worry, so see how you get on.

I have found a partially reasonable alternative for Vodafone TV for Freeview access for when Vodafone TV goes out of service in September. It is Google TV running the TiViMate App, and using Matt Huisman's RAW playlist, available by searching on Google for M3U8 NZ files.

It does cost a small amount for a subscription of $4.99US on Google Play per year for up to 5 devices for TiViMate, or a lifetime version for $19.99US.

Adding MX Player as an External Player setting External player on Player settings on TiViMate allows live TV to be paused for a few minutes. Unfortunatey there is no rewind or fast forward as yet. Also the Vodafone TV Remote can be added to Google TV as an additional bluetooth remote to better control TiViMate making some use of Vodafone TV components.

It gives you the advantage of Trackside for free, plus some other additional free channels.

I am working on getting recording working to SMB attached share on a Windows 10 machine. I may setup another forum in GeekZone to cover this if I am successful.

This solution does have the advantage of not requiring an aerial.

Salvaging whatever I can, are there any hints/tips on re-using this remote on other devices? Normally I'd expect this to be either paired to a device, or act as a universal remote.

Yes. Vodafone TV Remote makes an excellent Google TV Remote because of the channel buttons, coloured buttons, and number buttons, especially becuase it also has the microphone button. In fact I would say it makes a better Google TV remote than the Google TV remote because of this.

To use it like this firstly you need to unpair it from Vodafone TV. Unplug Vodafone TV, and then pair it to Google TV using the Remotes and Accessories section of the settings, and holding down the 3 and yellow buttons for 5 sconds until the power button flashes red.

Not yet, I put my request through last Thursday. Pretty sure the refund form said up to 10 working days so I'll keep an eye on it.

I'm expecting it to do both, as it does with VTV. The remote controls a few things on the TV (using infra-red):
* Volume
* Input select (including up/down)
* On/Off (with Bluetooth at the same time)

I am also actively investigating an alternative and have started a forum for a particular solution. Perhaps @IvanPiacun should inspire me to do some serious work on documenting what I've done! I started with Next PVR and after experimenting with a few client options, we now use Kodi as a client to Next PVR in the kitchen where we have a computer monitor, but never used to watch TV. Funny how the right technology can easily change behaviours.
There have been some issues. That slowed the documentation process, but the issues seem to have settled down.
I've started a discusion here.
